Bartending can be a very lucrative job, with top bartenders making as much as $40 an hour. And in New York City that is quite possible. You must like to interact with customers and sometimes move very fast, and you will stand for hours on end, but it can also be very enjoyable. Of course, you will be expected to be the resident mixologist at every neighborhood party from here on out, but you will not want for invitations. A good bartender can get a job practically any where, from a neighborhood pub, to a five star restaurant, to cruise ships and resorts.

One of the best known bartending schools not only in New York City, but in the other cities where they have schools is the American Bartenders School. They can have you working in as little as two weeks and they have a job placement program.

At the New York Bartending School you can take a trial class, get a feel before you buy and they have two courses, Bartending and mixology is a two week course, which can be taken afternoons, evenings or on weekends and the cocktail course which is a 16 hour refresher course. They also have a job placement program.

Professional Bartending Schools of America is a nationwide organization with thirty-six locations. The New York City school is at 68 West 39th St. 2nd Floor New York, New York. 10603. The course is forty hours and includes certification in alcohol awareness, with teaches you how to deal with difficult situations. They have a nationwide placement service.

ABC Bartending Schools is another with schools nationwide. The New York City school is at 500 8th Avenue(Between 35th and 36th streets) 8th Floor Suite 808 New York City, New York 10018. The forty hour course covers all the bartending skills plus
Health and Safety / Legal Responsibilities (certification) - Students will learn the legal responsibilities, health and safety concerns of the workplace and Resumes and Interviewing Techniques - You will learn successful interviewing for a bartending position. Students are trained on how to fill out an application, resume preparation, and how to dress and respond to interview questions.

Go to more than one school, get all the particulars from each one. Check the cost, what each one offers, their job placement records. Check and see if they have a payment program and if they accept any programs such as the GI bill. Get references from former students, if they offer that service. And one very important thing is to pick the bartending school where you feel the most comfortable, the one that has the staff that you can relate too and have confidence in.
