Where to Take German Language Lessons in San Francisco

Henry Swanson
The German School of San Francisco is a non-profit educational institution that offers German language classes for both adults and children. Adults pay $700 per year and children pay $800 per year in tuition, unless parents and their children register together, in which case each pays only $600 in tuition. Registrants can also earn a $100 discount off of tuition for each new referral they get to sign up. The school also does offer some partial scholarships. Classes are taught in an immersion style where as much as possible of the class is conducted in German. Classes are on Saturdays from 9:30 to noon and run from September all the way to May.

The City College of San Francisco, the local community college, also offers a number of German language classes. Elementary German, Practical German and Advanced Conversational German are all currently on offer for the fall semester of 2009. Tuition is $20 per credit with classes normally being for three credits, so generally expect to pay $60 per class. There are currently no non-credit offerings for German language classes at CCSF.

The Listen & Learn Group is a worldwide network of language tutors that offer German language lessons in the San Francisco area. Courses offered are German 1 to 1 Business, German 1 to 1 General and German Group Lessons for small groups of two or more. You can visit their website to learn more about their course offerings.

San Francisco State University offers beginning and intermediate German language classes as well as a variety of German cultural classes. Generally students must apply and be accepted to the school, but it is possible to take classes here without becoming a formal student through the College of Extended Learning's Open University program. Check directly with them to find out which courses can be taken through this program.

One resource that should not be missed for anyone seeking foreign language instruction in San Francisco is the freely available Rosetta Stone software through the San Francisco Public Library. This software can be accessed over the internet through their website by holders of a San Francisco library card, or any California resident who signs up for a virtual "E-card" through their website.

One final resource to check out is the craigslist.org website, where local tutors may post and offer their services in German language instruction. German language instruction is not as widely available in San Francisco as is some other foreign language instruction such as Spanish or Chinese, but there certainly are resources if you poke around. Good luck in your search!
