Some paid opportunities can sometimes be found on Craigslist.com. Local community centers and immigrant centers offer English and citizenship classes. Adult education centers in your community and local school district also usually other places to teach English. Community, immigrant, and adult education centers also gladly accept volunteers to help in the English classroom or tutoring lab (especially for those English learners earning their GEDs or high school diplomas).
If you live in or near a fairly large-sized city, you might consider looking up the agency or agencies that resettle refugees in your area. There may be more than one organization doing so, and they often offer ESL classes to their clients. You can be a cultural mentor to a refugee individual or family, or an ESL teacher to a group or an individual. Sometimes these same agencies hire ESL teachers, so be sure to check their websites for job postings.
Another option is to teach English online. There are many resources to help you get started with your online tutoring business and good forums with ideas and insights into the field. Here are a couple:
www.buddyschool.com
www.fortemall.com
Online tutor forum at Work at Home Moms website at www.wahm.com
Also search for companies online that hire English teachers. You work a set schedule from home teaching English online, but the students come to you instead of you having to search for them.
Some resources to check out for both volunteer and paid positions for teaching English are:
Craigslist.com
State nonprofit association job boards
Individual community center and resettlement agency websites
Idealist.com (Check this website for a list of them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VOLAG)
Local school districts' employment website or job line
Whatever avenue you decide to pursue, know that you are making a major difference in the lives of the newcomers you are teaching. Let yourself be open to the wonderful things they will teach you as well.
