Where to Vacation in the Cayman Islands

Discover Which of the Three Islands is Best for You

Rebecca White-Glanders
Nestled in the crystalline waters of the Caribbean, the Cayman Islands are a popular getaway for travelers of all ages. When planning or considering a vacation to the Caymans, vacationers have to ask themselves one big question: which island best fits my needs? The Cayman Islands are actually comprised of three main islands: Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

Grand Cayman

As its name implies, Grand Cayman is the largest of the three islands at roughly 76 square miles. As such, it is the best known and most developed of the trio. It is the most "tourist-oriented" of the islands, with the widest range of accommodations and organized activities.

In addition to its famous Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman is also home to the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park. If the idea of hiking in unspoiled jungle appeals to you, then the 2-mile-long National Trust's Mastic Trail might also be for you. Another interesting "hotspot" on Grand Cayman? Take a trip to Hell - yes, Hell - a bleak landscape comprised of black shards of rock. The local post office will even stamp your correspondence to family and friends as being from Hell!

Cayman Brac

Although Cayman Brac is only 14 miles long, it offers the most breathtaking views in the Cayman Islands. Cayman Brac is so named for its dramatic bluff vistas - in fact, "brac" is actually the Gaelic word for bluff. This relatively small isle gives visitors the experience of a small, seafaring community in a rugged tropical paradise.

Cayman Brac is a wonderful spot for diving, as several wrecks are available around the island for divers to explore. The islands is also home to countless caves perfect for the adventurous spirit, including Peter's Cave and Halfway Ground Cave. In 1996, a Parrot Reserve was also established on Cayman Brac, making birdwatching a fun and exciting activity.

Little Cayman

Although Little Cayman is only 10 miles long and the least developed of the three islands, it has much to offer. There are more than fifty unique dive sites off of Little Cayman, including an opportunity to dive in the Bloody Bay Marine Park. If you want to escape the chaos of everyday life completely, then Little Cayman may be the best island for you. With a resident population of around 200 individuals, its easy to find deserted beaches, lagoons and tiny islands to enjoy alone or with the one you love.
