Where Were You on Sept. 11?

News Events that Shaped My Generation

Single Mom
I am sure everyone remembers where they were on the morning of 9/11. 9/11, for my generation, will be like Elvis dying or Kennedy being shot was for our parents. Two other "where were you" items so far in my generation are Princess Diana dying and the OJ Simpson verdict. These three events were forever marked in my mind and I can tell you exactly what I was doing and I even recall the emotions I had with each -- and sometimes when it is the anniversary of Princess Di and 9/11, I tend to have a flood of these raw emotions coming back to me and I become anxious.

I was watching the Today Show and saw the building that was hit with the first plane. At the time the Today Show was assuming that it was probably a commuter small plane, but were very steadfast that they were not sure. I really did not think anything too much of it, other than feeling sorry for the people in the plane and building.

I went on with my regular routine and dropped my son off at school. On my way to work I put on the Today Show on my radio (our local channel broadcasts 24/7 on radio with what is airing on their channel and I was able to listen). Before I got to my office, I heard Katie and Matt talking to Jim Miklaszewski when he felt something. They cut away from him. I do not remember if this was before the second plane or after. Once I got to the office everyone was gathered around televisions and we watched the confusion and heartache of the people involved in NYC.

We witnessed on television the second plane hitting the building. It was said that this was an act of terrorism, but we did not know from who.

I eventually left my office to go home to watch the news coverage. I could not concentrate at my office, which is in a popular large city and I was working on the 45th floor at the time. I was so scared that our city could be next. I had to leave.

My heart goes out to the victims of this incredible act of terrorism. I feel so sorry for the people left behind without their loved ones- families were changed forever, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, sons & daughters forever lost. I remember all of the pregnant women who were now without their husband and their unborn babies who will never know their fathers in person.

I think about them often and today will say a prayer for all those effected by 9/11, including our men and women oversees fighting for our country.
