Where Would We Be Without Cream Cheese
Some of Our Favorite Foods Just Would Not Be the Same Without Cream Cheese
Cream Cheese has been around for so long that we take it for granted, but where would we be without it I wonder. Bagels for a start are just not the same without Cream Cheese, and Cheesecake or Veggie Pizza would not exist either without it either.
The name that is most associated with cream cheese is of course Philadelphia, the name being adopted as a brand name as far back as 1880, according to Kraft Foods, who own the brand.
Cream cheese was first made in the USA by William Lawrence in 1872 (according to Wikipedia ), but there are references to it being used in the UK as long ago as 1754, and it's origins stem from the Normandy region or France, at least back to 1651.
Unlike regular cheese, cream cheese is intended to be prepared and eaten fresh. It's not a dairy product that is meant to mature before eaten, and therefore prior to refrigeration being common, had limited use and was likely to have been seasonal as well.
Although in the UK for example, cream cheese has in the past more commonly been used as a spread, it's in the USA where a whole wealth of products that use cream cheese have developed, and in the last few years these have become more universal and seen in many countries.
Probably the most typical example of this is the Bagel, which was only seen in fancier American style delicatessens in the UK even ten years ago, but now can be found in coffee shops, cafes and supermarkets all over the country.
For most people, a bagel just would not be the same if you could not spread cream cheese on it.
Cream cheese is pretty much an essential ingredient too in making cheesecakes, and outdoor parties and picnics would not be complete without a cream cheese and veggie pizza either.
It's used in desert whips, cake frosting, and many kinds of dips as well.
I bet if you stop and think, you can find a number of your favorite food items that just would not exist if not for cream cheese.
I do just wonder though, why is it the price of cream cheese is so high when you go to the delicatessen and have it on your bagel.
