Reality Television Of Value
While I do find value in some shows like Super-nanny and America's Biggest Loser; I find other so-called reality television shows to be a complete waste of time. Some of the reality television shows; I can't even watch because there's so much back-stabbing between the contestants, that it promotes the ideas of selfishness with total disregard for the well being of others.
Alliances
While this might be great for ratings to take people away from their lives for a little while; the overall message is a negative one. The people form so-called alliances with people to play their little game for the purposes of getting ahead and possibly helping each other; while, later on in the show they'll stab each other in the back by totally going against the person.
Ethically And Morally Wrong
While some might see this as friendly competition, I see it as being ethically and morally wrong and dysfunctional. If television shows continue to promote these ideas; I see our society as whole going in a downward spiral. I don't want my children watching these shows and learning those values. I want my children to learn how to respect each other and work together as a team toward a common goal.
Network Executives
I think some of the network executives ought to be ashamed of themselves for putting such things on television and then calling it reality television for entertainment purposes.
Scripted
I think a lot of the reality television shows are scripted in not so much the dialogue as the circumstances that are presented.
Facts Of Life
Sometimes the facts of life are that, life's not that interesting to make it on television.

Post a CommentI wouldn't know because I've never watched a reality show ... for real! ... but from the tidbits I've read, it seems you are right on. ~~~ mike ~~~
Kurt, good piece. Let me burst your bubble a little more if you didn't already know. All game show have anywhere from 50-70% of thier audiences are paid so they will respond as required. Also talk show audiences are paid. Ahh, the glamorous life of a hollywood extra.
Kurt, your views on "reality" TV mirror my own. I find very little reality in these shows. It seems as if there isn't any drama, screaming and yelling, or controversy in general, the show's ratings will go away. If you think about it, all those shows are essentially the same.
Very good article!
I totally agree with your assessment, Kurt. I call it the "dumbing down of TV". It is also rife in advertising. There isn't a lot of meaning or substance to much of what we are offered on TV.
