The IRS recommends that tax returns be filed electronically to eliminate the risk of lost paper returns, and that refund deposits be made by direct deposit. The IRS reminds citizens that it does not contact taxpayers by e-mail to alert them of pending refunds, and such messages are common identity theft scams.
