For one, bicycles provide many health benefits, it's a lot better to get some exercise every day other than to sit in an air conditioned car. It's also much more affordable to ride a bike to and from work than to ride a car, which is paid for with insurance, the price of the car, gas prices, etc. A lot of money can be saved via riding bicycles instead of vehicles.
Regardless of the price of the bicycles, there are a few different types. The main types of bicycles I typically see are BMX or Trick bikes, and then mountain bikes. They both definitely have their advantages, however, I prefer Trick bikes for a few reasons.
Durability
You would think that mountain bikes are much more durable. Every single mountain bike I've had has lasted much shorter than each BMX bike I've had, when driven under the same types of conditions. Mountain bikes tend to stop working well after a while, because they're more complex and a lot more things can go wrong with them. DMX bikes are simplistic, one speed, one set of gears, and pretty much everything is pre-set and ready to go.
I can't apply this to all Mountain bikes, because there are several mountain bikes which are durable, but for the most part, I've had more luck with BMX bikes.
Appearance
As far as I'm concerned, trick bikes look much more stylish for someone of my age than a mountain bike. This is less and less true as you get older, however.
Ease of Use
Mountain bikes by far have this quality over the bmx bikes. Bmx bikes are much harder to pedal, do not coast as well, are harder to ride up hill or against wind, and are typically a bit harder overall. Mountain bikes are much easier to use for the fact that they can be changed into different gears, the tires are typically bigger for more speed, and they're much easier to pedal in most situations.
Regardless of the fact that mountain bicycles are much easier to pedal and maintain physical stature with, I prefer trick bikes because you can do much more with them, they seem more capable of taking a beating, and they're much more reliable in the sense that the chain and shocks don't always "mess up".
However, ride whichever you prefer! Ride which is the most comfortable and convenient for yourself.
