Which is the Better Way of Dealing with Hair Loss: Wigs or Cutting the Hair Short?

Stacy J. Day
I have always had problem hair, whether it was due to breakage, thinning or simply dryness. It wasn't until recently that I experienced some really significant hair loss where I lost over 70 % of my hair. In the past, my hair was so extremely thick that a little thinning or breakage wasn't noticeable to other people. There was always enough hair left for me to hide my "trouble" spots in the past, but not currently. After believing that my hair loss was due to over-processing my hair by putting at-home relaxers in it, I began having my hair professionally styled, which didn't help the problem in the least. I finally had to make a decision after discovering that the massive hair loss was due to a medical issue, and I had a difficult time deciding whether to buy a cute wig or have my hair cut really short and start all over. I ultimately chose to purchase a wig, and you might find yourself in the same situation, so which choice is really best?

Prior to experiencing significant hair loss, I would have never imagined wearing a wig. I always pictured a wig feeling hot and simply uncomfortable. I also believed that I would feel self-conscious wearing a wig and even went as far as imagining myself losing my wig while in a public place. Despite my strong dislike of wigs, I decided to buy one because having my hair cut short simply wasn't an option. Since my hair loss had resulted in actual bald spots, if I were to have my hair cut short, it would have had to have been cut bald in order to look even, and this was totally unacceptable. After coming to this conclusion, I finally visited a local wig shop where a nice woman helped me to make the perfect choice. I was utterly amazed at how the wig instantly transformed me, making me look like my old self with a full head of hair. I wear the wig religiously, which is giving my hair time to recover.

So, should you get a wig or have your hair cut short? Well, it actually depends on the amount of hair loss you're experiencing and how you feel about wearing wigs or having your hair cut. If you're strongly opposed to wigs the way that I was, you might want to visit a beauty supply/wig shop that will allow you to try on several different styles. You might be as surprised as I was by how attractive and natural a wig can look, while giving you time to stop your hair loss and regrow your hair. Both wearing a wig and having your hair cut short are terrific options when it comes to dealing with massive hair loss, but if you would rather not wear a wig, a short new haircut can make you look good while keeping things natural. Getting an attractive haircut will also allow you to rid yourself of all the bad, broken hair, allowing new hair to grow at a faster rate.

I don't plan on wearing a wig for the rest of my life, but for the time being, I must admit that it's the best decision I've made in a long time. Had my hair loss not resulted in bald spots, I might have very well chosen the short haircut route, but I don't regret my decision, and I'm sure that you won't regret whatever decision you eventually make either. Extreme hair loss can be a blow to a woman's self-esteem and lead to great frustration and even depression. Luckily there are many options available for women to look their absolute as they search for ways to reverse their hair loss.
