Which Democratic Candidates are Really Against the Iraq War?

Erin L
Joe Biden
Biden, a Democratic senator from Delaware, has asked Bush for a change in direction in the Iraq war. He stated on May 13 2007 that he is in favor of federalism in Iraq, that is to say that Baghdad should be the capital of several states and that the states should be apportioned to different ethnic and religious groups. He also believes the United States needs a timetable stating when our soldiers should be withdrawn from Iraq.

Hillary Clinton
In a press release dated May 15 2007 Clinton stressed her intent to get US troops out of Iraq and to end the Iraq war as soon as possible. She also supports a cutoff date of March 31, 2008 for funding of the Iraq war, according to the May 15 2007 San Francisco Examiner. However, she has said in the past that she does not advocate a timeline for the end of the war itself. Senator Clinton did initially vote for the war and voted against redeployment of our soldiers from Iraq last June.

John Edwards
Former Senator Edwards voted for the war authorization, but now puts political pressure on those still in office to end the war. He was quoted on May 17 2007 as saying, "As patriots, we must use our power and the responsibility that comes with it to push our government to support our troops in the most important way it can -- by ending this war and bringing them home." His political ads currently ask those still in Washington to create legislation to withdraw troops.

Dennis Kucinich
Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio is such an outspoken critic of the Iraq war that he has initiated articles of impeachment against VP Dick Cheney. Kucinich is expected to address a town meeting in Portland Maine on May 19 2007 regarding impeachment proceedings for both President Bush and Vice President Cheney; the meeting was organized by political activists.

Barack Obama
Sen. Obama of Illinois stated on May 16 2007 that he also would back a cutoff date for Iraq war funding of March 31, 2008. He also favors a bill outlining the plan for Iraq's new government. Last June Barack voted against legislation that would deploy troops out of Iraq but has changed his stance with public opinion now largely against the war.

Christopher Dodd
Dodd, D Connecticut, has said in ads that he wants to end funding of the Iraq war now and criticizes his fellow democrats for not passing legislation to do so. On May 15 2007 he said that he would be introducing legislation to cut off Bush's available funds for the war that same week.
