Which is Your Favourite Flavour of Crisps or Chips?

John Smither
In the United Kingdom a search was launched several months ago for a new flavour of crisps (or chips to those of you from the other side of the pond). A competition was launched for the British public to devise a new flavour. The many varieties offered for sale in the UK far outstrips those offered by most other countries, whenever I plan to visit the USA I am always asked for a selection of the flavours not available over there. Namely smoky bacon, cheese and onion or salt and vinegar being the first choices amongst those requests.

The competition received over one million entries and has now been whittled down to just six finalists, these six have their chosen flavour being sent out into the market place for the general public to try. A six month trial period is now under way, at the end of the six months the six flavours will be withdrawn, a vote will be taken by the public and then the winning flavour will be introduced as a permanent new addition to the already large choices available.

So what are these new flavours?

In no particular order, and with no idea as to how they taste, some of the titles sound very good, others not so appealing.

1- Chilli and Chocolate, I am not too sure on this combination myself, the thought of these two flavours together leaves me wondering if they should be kept separate and not together in this way.

2- Crispy Duck with Hoisin Sauce, I am guessing that the sauce part is included in the taste and not as a separate addition you apply yourself, although many years ago what is now ready salted flavour, you had a small sachet of salt and you had to add your own to taste, so maybe you get the sauce separate. I will have to investigate that further.

3- Cajun Squirrel, squirrel has been on the menu of a few select restaurants for some time, especially bred for the food chain. Now this new flavour in the form of a potato snack! I personally am not so sure. I have not tried squirrel, but then perhaps I just don't go to the right type of eating establishment!

4- Fish and Chips, the idea of the old British favourite being presented in this way is somewhat appealing, although personally I would prefer to eat the real thing, not very healthy but why not live a little!

5- Builder's breakfast, I am guessing this is based on another British favourite the full fry up, sausage, bacon, eggs etc. Variations of this have already been used in part, through smoky bacon, a sausage flavour was once available, baked bean flavour was another that had a short run before, hope this one lasts the distance, I do like a good full English breakfast, it's the first thing I have to eat whenever I return to the UK if I have been away for a while.

6- Onion Bhaji, this is a favourite from the Indian food that is very popular in the UK, the good old curry. I imagine that this will be a very popular choice, onion bhaji's are a small side dish that you get alongside your curry, so I am guessing this will also be a popular flavour.

It will be an interesting result, which is the most popular, personally I would go for the one listed last, the Onion Bhaji. But then that is only my choice.

This is a very interesting article. I think there is no flavor better than salt and vinegar. You cannot improve on perfection.
