Many herbs are completely safe to use during pregnancy however, there are those that should be avoided due to their ability to cause uterine contractions. Read on to discover which herbs are harmful during pregnancy. PLEASE NOTE: Just because an herb is not listed here does not mean it is completely safe to use during pregnancy. I have done my best to compile a thorough list of herbs that may be harmful during pregnancy. However, I would advise doing research on any herb before consuming it and speaking to a qualified medical professional.

Herbs that may be Harmful during Pregnancy - Angelica

Angelica should not be used during pregnancy as it could be harmful to the mother and baby. It may cause miscarriage as it promotes the contraction of the uterus and expels the afterbirth.

Herbs that may be Harmful during Pregnancy - Black Cohosh

Due to its potency, black cohosh can be very harmful during pregnancy. Although it has been used for ages to ease the pain of childbirth, it should only be used during the birth and under the supervision of a qualified practitioner of herbal medicine. Never take this herb during pregnancy.

Herbs that may be Harmful during Pregnancy - Blue Cohosh

Just as its black cousin, blue cohosh can also be harmful during pregnancy. It should only be taken under strict supervision of a qualified herbal medicine practitioner if using to dull the pain of childbirth. It should never be taken during the pregnancy.

Herbs that may be Harmful during Pregnancy - Goldenseal

Goldenseal is another herb that can be harmful during pregnancy. Although normally a very healing herb, goldenseal can be harmful to the mother and/or baby if taken internally during a pregnancy.

Juniper can be harmful to women during pregnancy and should be avoided during the childbearing year. It can cause irritation to the kidney, bladder and other organs if taken for long periods of time internally.

Mandrake is another herb that should never, ever be taken during pregnancy. Even when you are not pregnant this herb can be harmful, causing severe purgative action. It should always be taken with care and avoided during pregnancy.

Pennyroyal should never be taken during pregnancy. It can be harmful to mother and child or even cause a miscarriage. It may cause uterine contractions which are extremely harmful during pregnancy.

Rue is another herb that can be harmful during pregnancy and should be avoided. It is an herb that requires extreme care when using even for someone who isn't pregnant. In addition, the essential oil of rue is also very toxic.
