According to AARP, there were new jobs added in September, 34,000 jobs to be specific. They weren't in the medical field, commerce or electronics. Those 34,000 new jobs were in the bar and restaurant business. There were jobs added in the private sector also. But the high rate of jobs added in the restaurant industry in one month's time is surprising and hopeful to many.
What happens when you get a few extra bucks in your pocket? You want to celebrate and do something you haven't been able to do - you want to go out to eat. You may only be able to afford a pizza or a burger, but eating out is, after all, more fun that eating at home!
Stock in chain restaurants such as McDonalds is on the rise. Granted, pay is low and benefits may be non-existent compared to other jobs, but work is work and it is a sign that the economy is improving, albeit slowly. Those folks who have a few extra dollars to spend eating out are helping to provide new job opportunities for others.
Of course, some of these jobs were filled by college grads who can't find work in their chosen profession, but at least they found work.
My niece is a senior at a top level college. She has been on the Deans list every semester; she is a very bright girl. For the last year she has been working part time as a hostess at a very popular restaurant in her college town. It shocked me a little that she would chose that job, but she said she took it with the understanding the next position for her could be assistant manager. If she sticks with it and enjoys it, there is the possibility of this becoming more than a job; it could turn into a career.
Perhaps standing on your feet for hours and smiling while asking, "Two for dinner?" was a good career choice after all.

Post a CommentI think it's disgraceful that people like your niece are forced to do what they do.
Maybe this job sector is growing can be correllated to the escalating high school dropout rate. Just a thought, though...
McDonalds and fast food chains do especially well during difficult times because it is often less expensive to eat off the dollar menu than it is to buy groceries.
This is so true. You never know what opportunities may arise from a hostess job or even volunteering. Great story.
I have a degree in English-ask me what it's good for? yep...nothing. Not like the old days. *sigh*
I'm surprised to hear McDonald's is on the rise with so many parents protesting the happy meal. ;-) Healthcare is always a good field to go into.
Good to know. :-)
Yep great way to start.
Very good advice. We all have to start somewhere.
when there are new jobs it is a good sign it means the economy is picking up, restaurants is a very important indicator because when people have no money they dont go out to eat, when they have money again they do. This is especially true for family restaurants
