Which Laptops Are Useful for Writers?

Erik Van Tongerloo
The market for laptops is growing at a fast rate with new products coming out all the time. As laptops grow in popularity, the prices in various models have significantly decreased in the last years.
Buying a laptop is an excellent idea for writers. There are many different reasons laptops are beneficial to writers; they are easy to carry and you don't need to first make notations on paper before you can start with making your writing work on computer.

There are some important things for a writer to consider when purchasing a laptop. To help figure out the kind of notebook which would best meet your individual needs you should ask yourself these questions:

- Do I write only at home or do I take my laptop with me to write in different places?
- Do I use pictures to accompany my writing?
- Do I use powerful software?
- Is a wireless system useful?
- Which price can I afford?

Writer's primarily use their laptop for browsing through different Internet sites, email communication, photo editing and web design. Most writers don't need powerful software like gamers do, and it makes no sense to buy the most expensive laptop if you don't need all the expensive features of the most sophisticated technologies.

The most important requirements which a laptop a writer may need are:

INTERNAL MEMORY
A writer mostly doesn't use the full capacity of their processor. However, a fast processor works quicker; the internal memory (RAM or random access memory) is more important for a writer. Writers need fast access to different programs and if the RAM of their laptop is not large enough, the computer will use the hard disk as virtual memory and the consequence is slowness during their work. The more RAM the better; I would recommend at least 1 Gigabyte for the internal memory of your new laptop.

SCREEN
The size and resolution of your screen is important. A larger resolution is better for getting more detail in your image and it is especially important if you open two applications or more at the same moment. Most laptops today have 15 inch screens and there are already many which are as large as 17 inch.

KEYBOARD AND MICE
Laptops have a small keyboard and it is worthwhile buying an external wireless keyboard. It is easier for typing text. A wireless optical mouse is an interesting accessory and works easier than most notebooks' built in mouse if you make use of a WI-FI system.

BATTERY LIFE
A writer uses a laptop mostly in different places and that is why battery life is an important aspect. If you use your laptop for a long time without electricity it is best to buy a laptop with a battery that will stay charged for extended lengths of time. It is necessary to check if your laptop can use batteries with a capacity of many hours. It is important you discharge your battery completely from time to time.

DVD BURNER
A DVD burner is a necessity if you buy a laptop. Every writer needs to store his/her documents on a safe place. In the first place they will store their documents on the hard disk but it is necessary to make a copy on a DVD or CD disk for security in case your laptop crashes or some files become damaged. It is best to store your documents on more than one disk. It is recommended to choose for a fast DVD burner for gaining time. There are DVD burners of 8X, 16X and even 52X recording speeds.

WIRELESS CARD
Even if you travel you can easily write and use your traveling time for doing research and putting your ideas immediately in a Word document instead of using a traditional paper notebook. A great advantage to using a laptop is preventing grammar and spelling mistakes and the ease of reading if you make your notifications to a real document.

It is recommended you have Internet access with your laptop when you are not at home. If your laptop has a wireless card your computer may automatically find the wireless system if you have the right computer settings.

A laptop is useful for every writer. The most suitable laptop is the one which fits your budget and allows you to run all the software you need. It is important to check for upgrade possibilities; it has no sense to buy a laptop with the fastest processor, RAM of 3 gigabyte, a screen of 17 inch if you don't need it but it is necessary to check if your processor and RAM can be upgraded so you won't need to buy a new laptop within three years or even sooner.

It is a good idea to carefully check before you decide and you will enjoy your writing with your laptop. Keep in mind that prices always drop and don't look for the most expensive model, but rather buy the one which has the features you need.

There is plenty of choice in laptops for writers and it is important to outline your needs before you buy your notebook. Almost every brand offers laptops which are suitable for writers but I recommend Hewitt Packard (HP) because of its excellent quality and good customer service, but there are also many other good brands on the market for you to consider.
