Which Lawn Mower is Right for Your Lawn?
There Are so Many Lawn Mowers on the Market, but How Much Mower Do You Really Need?
A reel mower is a very simple mower. These often have no motor and rely solely on human strength. They are very easy to use; however, you will not want to mow much grass with them. These reel mowers have one reel that has 5-6 blades rotating to cut the grass very evenly. They make a lawn look excellent as long as the blades are sharp. The cost of a reel mower is approximately $80-$100. This is a very reasonable price for any mower. Easy to store, easy to maintain, reel mowers are ideal for very small city yards, less than 1000 square feet.
The next step in mowers is the standard push mower. You can find just about any price range for a push mower ranging from $80-$450. Push mowers have very many options, you can surely find one for any need you have. If you have a hilly yard, try a self propelled model. These mowers are very easy to push; you only need to guide them as they go. A self-propelled push mower is quite heavy, so you will only want the option if you really need it. You can also get bags for these mowers, mulching options and all sorts of wheel size. The standard cut length of a push mower is about 20-24 inches. A push mower is ideal for any yard less than 3000 square feet, and is ideal to have on hand no matter how large your property is. You will always have a small spot where you need a push mower to cut the grass.
Next comes the favorite mower of many people. The riding lawn mower! Everyone loves to have a riding lawn mower. The cut size varies depending on the model, but the standard sizes are 32 inches, 42 inches and 48 inches. Obviously, the larger your lawn, the larger deck size you will want to purchase. If you are mowing more than an acre, you will definitely want a riding lawn mower. Also, in this category are the zero turn riding lawn mowers. These zero-turn mowers are ideal for large lawns as the blades are always cutting grass and you can mow in a very efficient pattern. A riding lawn mower is ideal for any lawn over 2000 square feet, and less than 3 acres.
If you still feel that you need a mower larger than the standard riding mower, you may want to check out a lawn tractor. By purchasing a small tractor you can attach a belly mower or a pull behind mower. The tractor will also come in handy for many other jobs and mowing can be done quickly and efficiently. A tractor can be fitted for a bucket which will allow you to lift heavy items as well as move dirt and dig. A tractor is ideal for a hobby farm, or any large acreage. The cutting deck for a tractor can range in size anywhere from 44 inches all the way up to 62 inches.
One more option for the home owner is an ATV mower. If you have an ATV, this may be a great option for you. Again, this option is best suited for an acreage, where you will be mowing at least a full acre of land. The ATV mowers generally hook up to the back and are pulled like a trailer. One downside to these is that you must have two engines running to mow, the ATV engine, and the mower engine.
After reading all these options, you can easily decide which one is right for you. The size of your lawn is the leading factor to consider. No one wants to spend hours upon hours mowing their lawn, so having the right mower is the key to efficient mowing!
