Which Marvel Comics Characters Should Be in the Avengers Movie?

Lee Andrew Henderson
After the highly successful first weekend for Iron Man Marvel Comics decided to announce their summer movie schedules for the next couple of years. Marvel already has the Wolverine movie set for summer of 2009 and the announced Iron Man 2 and Thor were open in 2010 and in 2011 Captain America and the Avengers would each get a movie. This begs the question which Avengers will be in the Avengers movie? These are who I think should and shouldn't be in the Avengers movie.

Should be in the Avengers movie: Captain America & Iron Man
We might as well start at the top. The two characters that absolutely have to be in the Avengers movie are Captain America and Iron Man. Both character have movies on the way so it seems pretty likely they will both be in the Avengers movie.

Should NOT be in the Avengers movie: Thor
Marvel Comics has announced a Thor movie already so it seems inevitable Thor will be in the Avengers but I just can't see a Norse god being a very good character on the big screen.

Should be in the Avengers movie: Hawkeye
Archer characters are great because they are unique characters and because they are also easy to pull off on the big screen. No special effects are needed to shoot a bow and arrow.

Should NOT be in the Avengers movie: Hulk (or She-Hulk)
I'm afraid that if the Hulk movie later this year is good that Marvel may decide to put the Hulk in the Avengers movie. I'm not one of those guys that says the Hulk looks crappy because he doesn't look real. How exactly do you make a real giant green dude? However, having animated characters interact with human characters looks awful on screen and Bruce Banner isn't interesting enough for him to be in his human form for a long period of time.

Should be in the Avengers movie: Black Knight
Honestly I have no reason to include Black Knight other than I think he's cool. If you don't like that then tough. It's my list.

Should NOT be in the Avengers movie: Scarlet Witch and Vision
Honestly I have no reason to exclude Scarlet Witch and Vision other than I don't think they are cool. If you don't like that then tough. It's my list.

Should be in the Avengers movie: Black Widow
Black Widow is an important character in Captain America, the Avengers and Shield. I imagine all will be included in the Avengers movie so Black Widow would be a good addition as well.

Should NOT be in the Avengers movie: Ant-Man and Wasp
Ant-Man and Wasp are charter members of the Avengers but I just don't know how you can put two characters that shrink and grow in the Avengers movie without making it really lame.

Should be in the Avengers movie: Black Panther or Luke Cage
Marvel is going to use Iron Man 2 to introduce Thor. Since there are no movies slated right now for after the Avengers then Marvel could use the Avengers movie to introduce fans to somebody that is going to get their own movie. The Black Panther and Luke Cage are both rumored to get movies at some point. It also seems like every super hero group has to have at least one black character and either of these would fill that role.

Should NOT be in the Avengers movie: Spider-Man or Wolverine
In their comics Marvel always uses Spider-Man and Wolverine when they need to spike a book's sales because they are both really popular. The problem is they are in everything. They are now over saturated to the point where they are annoying. The Avengers shouldn't need Spider-Man and Wolverine to be good.

Should be in the Avengers movie: Spider Woman
Spider-man should not be in the Avengers but another Spider person probably wouldn't hurt move merchandise. There needs to be more than just one woman on the team too and we've already cut Wasp, Scarlet Witch and She-Hulk.

Should NOT be in the Avengers movie: Fantastic Four
Invisible Woman and Mr. Fantastic were once in the Avengers, Human Torch was in the West Coast Avengers and Thing was an honorary Avenger at one point. Let's hope none of them are put in the Avengers movies. We don't need to be reminded how bad the Fantastic Four movies were.

Man, I've been reading Marvel comics since 1975 and I don't understand why they simply don't start with the ORIGINAL founding members and introduce other members in the second and third film.

My concern is that this film is now so overcrowded with characters.

Joss Whedon may be fine with an ensemble cast when writing for TV and comic books, but I feel when it comes to true cinema narrative, he's way in over his head and NOT even close to being in the same league as experienced ( A list ) Directors.

u cant have an avengers movie without the holy trinity (cap, iron man AND thor). there basically the embodiment of the whole concept.

Great list here and I totally agree with it from top to bottom. As a big Marvel fan I am psyched about an Avengers movie, but just hope Marvel will do it the right way-like you said, we don't need another screw up like The Fantastic Four or Hulk movies- I really don't know what they were thinking with either of those and yeah, Spiderman has been overdone. You should check out my Marvel Origin pieces when they get published in the next couple of days. Great piece here!

What-what? I think I keep saying this, but it just has to be said: The Ultimates! Haha, if you read the story line of the Ultimates, you have the perfect Avengers movie. And some of the key characters you'd keep would be Thor (who had an AMAZINGLY complicated and crazy story line in TU) and Ant-Man and Wasp, one of the most complicated superhero couples in the universe (that's right, not world ... universe).

I agree with all except the Scarlet Witch. she could be great if they pick someone really hot to play her. Loved the costume growing up. LOL
