Which One of Your Kid's Teachers is a Pervert?

Many pedophiles seek positions in schools, children's sports, or churches so they can have access to children. Sometimes, they "groom," or seduce, children over time by various means.

Sometimes, they just grab and rape them.

Unfortunately, this means that parents must suspect any school employee, including teachers, janitors, principals, coaches, and counselors as potential suspects. Indeed, because pedophiles seek employment in places where they can meet children, like schools, children's sports, and churches, there are probably more pedophiles employed by places that your child goes alone than there are in a random population.

It is estimated that about 2% of the U.S. population are pedophiles. School environments, however, are enriched with pedophiles, so that percentage must be higher.

Dr. Richard Sipe has estimated that, among Catholic priests, at least 6% have sexually abused minors. That's a bare minimum. He also says that the percentage might be as high as 30%. A friend of mine who dropped out of Catholic seminary says that "all" of the seminarians are pedophiles. That percentage is probably a tad high.

Because school and other child-orientated environments are enriched with pedophiles, the chance that any one teacher or coach is a pedophile is much higher than the 2% background risk. Taking a number between Sipe's estimates, there may be as high as 10% risk for each adult your child knows in a school, sport, or church setting.

These percentages are additive, which means that if your child knows 3 adults, then each one of those people has a 10% chance, so your child has a 30% or approximately 1 in 3 chance of routinely hanging around with a pedophile.

Some examples of recent arrests and convictions of people in schools or other children's places:

March 20, 2007 in Arkansas, an assistant band director at Bryant High School was arrested on sexual assault charges. Joseph Bresnahan had at least four encounters over a three-month period with a 15-year-old male student, police say.

March 19, 2007 in New York, 58-year-old Francis Evelyn, a janitor at P.S. 91 in Brooklyn, was arrested, accused of repeatedly raping and sodomizing an 8-year-old girl inside the school. The complaint says that he dragged her down to a basement bathroom to assault her.

David Jemmott was indicted in December 2005 and arraigned in Brockton Superior Court on Feb. 1, 2006, on one count of statutory rape of a child and two counts of indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or older. It was found on March 20, 2007 that Jemmott is the manager of the newly opened "The G-Club," an under-20 gospel dance club.

March 8, 2007, Alain Cupas, 28, of Miramar, Florida, a security guard who also works as the girls wrestling coach at Everglades High School was been arrested on a charge of molesting a 15-year-old student while escorting her through the building. He faces one count of performing a lewd/lascivious act on a 12- to 16-year-old. On March 15, he was arrested again for similar acts against two other minor girls.

March 17, 2007, in Glasford, Illinois, a former high school teacher and coach was arrested for allegedly having sex with a student. Ian McDonald, 31, who was a social studies teacher and boys' basketball coach at Illini Bluffs High School, is charged with criminal sexual assault while in a position of authority. Allegedly, he had sex on several occasions with a 17-year-old girl in his car, apartment, and at the school.

These were all in the last few days. Take a look at the adults in your child's life, and be careful. Remember that pedophiles are some of the most charming men you've ever met.
