Which Oscar Best Picture Nominee Deserves to Win?
A Ranking of the Nominees from Most to Least Deserving
The King's Speech makes history exciting. It is the only feel good front-runner. Of the past six best picture winners, only one has a feel good ending. It's time for Oscar to honor a victory again.
Black Swan is the most thrilling of the nominees. It is an impeccably acted emotional movie that kept viewers talking. If Oscar were more a fan of psychological thrillers, it would win.
The Social Network was a well-executed, intelligent and suspenseful movie. It doesn't miss a beat with its pacing and dialogue. Aaron Sorkin deserves to win for best adapted screenplay.
127 Hours is a compelling film and deserves its nomination. However, too few people have seen it. With two other independent films up for best picture leading the box office pack, the case for 127 Hours to win is even harder to make.
The Coen Brothers superbly crafted True Grit. It was the first western to earn more than $100 million since the 1990s. There are too many original stories to contend with this year for a win.
A huge financial success, Inception released too early in the year and cost itself some Oscar momentum because of it. It was an original action pic, but its confusing grid of a storyline makes it hard to envision it winning best picture.
The Fighter was a good film with excellent performances. It is as good as it is because of the performances. The Oscars will go to who truly deserves them- supporting actors, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo or Amy Adams.
What's exceptional about Winter's Bone is its leading lady, best actress nominee Jennifer Lawrence and supporting actor, nominee John Hawkes. Lack of box office success coupled with some really boring parts means Winter's Bone doesn't stand a chance.
It is the highest grossing film of 2010. It is quite possibly the sweetest film too. It deserves its nomination; however, it should win for Best Animated Feature.
The Kids Are All Right missed the opportunity to tell a deeper story about what it's like to be the all right kids of same-sex parents. It instead showed us the moms might not be all that all right. Annette Bening was a standout of this dramedy.
