There are many things that you can buy at Costco, and some you should not. When it comes to back to school shopping there are plenty of things that top my list of items you should never buy at a wholesale club. I once thought that buying the back to school items at these locations would actually come out cheaper, but when I actually started comparing prices I was really shocked at what I found. So in order to help other families before the back to school season starts, I thought I would list the school supplies that you would want to steer clear of.
Backpacks
This is not to say that Costco does not have nice backpacks, but in reality you can get a much better deal at your local Wal-Mart for backpacks. Especially if you have more than one child to shop for. First of all Costco just does not have the wide variety of options to choose from like Wal-Mart does. Also the prices of backpacks at Costco are usually several dollars more expensive than at the other stores.
Copy Paper
They usually have large bundles of copy paper at Costco, but in comparison I still found the Wal-Mart sales prices to be a lot more reasonable. You can buy a few large packs of paper to stock up on when Wal-Mart has the sales. Costco does have nice quality paper, but if you want to save a few dollars you will not want to buy them there. You can also do better at your local office supply store when it comes to copy paper.
Spiral Notebooks
Nothing beats the small stores when it comes to notebooks for back to school time. You may be able to buy them in bulk at Costco, but the bulk prices still do not compare to the sales prices you have at you local stores. This is a big item on the do not buy list. During the back to school sale you will want to stock up on as many notebooks as you can.
Binders
You can get a pack of binders for a reasonable price from Costco, but when the back to school sales start the prices at your local stores can not be beat. The down side to buying the binders at your local Costco store is that you can only get them in one color when you buy the set. So if your kids want their binders in a variety of colors you may be better off going to another location.
