How do you know what shampoo to use? That depends on the type of hair you have. It may also depend on the condition of your scalp. How do you determine your hair type? Do a self analysis. If your hair resists breakage, is easy to comb, curl and style and has a nice sheen, you have normal hair. If you have dry hair it may appear fuzzy, brittle or dehydrated. Oily hair has to be washed more often and may appear greasy and limp. There is a natural shampoo formula for every hair type. Which one is right for you?

Citrus shampoo is clarifying. If you have oily hair, it will remove grease without drying. You won't find a better shampoo for oily hair than the one you make yourself. Make your own natural citrus shampoo by mixing pure glycerin and lemon or lime juice. You will find glycerin in most craft stores. It's in the soap making section.

Homemade citrus shampoo:

  • 1 - 8 oz. bottle glycerin
  • 1/4 cup lemon or lime juice

Protein shampoo is designed to give limp hair body. It can also nourish over-styled hair. It's great for color treated hair as well. Skip the expensive brands. Use pure glycerin as a shampoo or mix a small bit of glycerin with plain yogurt. Then, condition hair with one of the following natural ingredients:

  • soy milk
  • almond milk
  • mayonnaise
  • plain yogurt

Leave on for at least five minutes. Then rinse well.

Oily shampoo is specially designed for extremely dry hair. It works very well on people of African descent. When it comes to dry, brittle hair, you can never use too much oil. You can add natural coconut oil to your glycerin shampoo for preconditioning. Use it to wash dry hair, then amend with a conditioning treatment containing one or more of these ingredients:

  • Avocado
  • Coconut oil
  • Sweet almond oil

Herbal shampoo provides natural therapy for scalp conditions, such as dandruff. It can also encourage new growth. Choose your herbs carefully. Each herb has a different purpose. Here are just a few:

  • Mint stimulates circulation to boost growth
  • Lemon balm is clarifying.
  • Yarrow prevents baldness.
  • Lavender is a disinfectant and odor remover.

To make your own all natural herbal shampoo, combine 8 ounces of pure glycerin with your choice of herbal extracts.

Please note: When making your own natural shampoo formulas, be sure to test for allergies prior to use.
