iPhone 4
The much anticipated iPhone 4 is redesigned, features multitasking, has a new high-resolution screen and a cool feature that lets you video chat with other iPhone users. The iPhone 4 has a very short learning curve and is best for consumers who want to blend simplicity with advanced technology.
Pros of the iPhone 4
• Display- The new Retina display features a great 960 by 649 pixel resolution. This high-resolution display is perfect for watching videos, viewing photos and for surfing the web. In contrast, the DROID X has a great, but lower resolution, 854 by 480 pixel display.
• Simplicity- The iPhone 4 is as simple to use as the previous versions. The basic home screen filled with pre-programmed apps and purchased apps are great for displaying the applications you use most on one convenient screen. Using the internet is very simple with the touch screen display, users rarely get confused. The simplicity and ease of use are great for most consumers, however, technology buffs would much rather prefer the more advanced DROID.
• Reduced Data Prices- AT&T recently came out with new data option plans, which allow for more people to afford the monthly payments on the new iPhone. This feature is both a pro and a con. The lower data costs allow for affordability, but the previous unlimited plan for $29.99 was replaced by the highest 2GB data plan for $24.99.
• Battery- The DROID X is a very powerful phone, but falls short when it comes to battery life. The iPhone features a battery that lasts up to 7 hours with talk time and 6 hours when surfing the internet on the 3G network. Of course, the phone gets better battery life when idol or using other features such as music playback.
• Video Chat- With a Wi-Fi connection, iPhone users can video chat with one another, which is a very cool feature on a handheld device.
Cons of the iPhone 4
• Data Plan- Heavy users will notice that watching streaming video online will now eat up their limited monthly data allotment. Although AT&T claims that very few users go beyond 2GB of data per month, heavy users will now have to limit their internet consumption.
• Reception- The iPhone has had problems reported by consumers that the antenna location causes interference with reception when holding the phone the wrong way. This is a huge drawback, but not limited to the iPhone. Other smartphones, such as the BlackBerry Bold 9700 also has this problem when holding the bottom portion of the phone.
• Camera- The 5MP digital camera does not have the same resolution or clarity as the competition, which is a huge drawback. However, the picture quality is still decent, but not up to par with the DROID X.
DROID X
The DROID X is the next generation of the highly popular DROID. The new DROID X features 8GB of internal memory with an expandable microSD slot, 8.0MP digital camera with video capture, 1GHz processor and a large 4.3" touch screen. The DROID X has a slightly higher learning curve than that of the iPhone, but features some great new technology that Apple has not yet touched base on.
Pros of the DROID X
• Screen Size- The 4.3" screen is ideal for watching movies, surfing the internet, viewing documents and pictures. The large screen also makes this phone a bit wider than the iPhone, but well worth it if you utilize the multi-media capacities of this phone.
• Android Marketplace- Unlike the Apple marketplace where developers must get their apps approved by Apple, the Android marketplace allows for nearly any type of app. This gives users more freedom for app choice.
• Fast Processor- The 1GHz processor allows for quick multitasking and switching between applications. The fast processor speeds allow for smoother transitions between tasks.
• Swype- Swype is a program that allows users to swipe their finger over letters on the virtual keyboard, thus making typing much faster and more efficient. The program is very good as making sure that the correct words are displayed, however, it is not perfect.
• Camera- The 8MP digital camera with video capture captures digital camera quality photos, which is great for capturing quick photos while on the go.
Cons of the DROID X
• Battery Life- The battery life barely lasts one day with moderate use.
• Android 2.1- As rumors surface the internet about a new Android 2.2 OS being released at some later point this year, Android 2.1 will soon be outdated.
Overall
Both phones offer their advantages and disadvantages over one another. We recommend the iPhone for users who value simplicity over the latest tech specs, and the DROID X for users who want the latest and greatest in smartphone technology. We recommend trying each phone out before purchase to see which one best suites your individual needs.
