1. Professional Football- NFL- The National Football League is the clear winner in this race. The Super Bowl is far and away the most watched sporting event each and every year, and each game gets huge viewers no matter what teams are playing. The NFL has done a great job marketing their league and it seems that fans have responded in an unprecedented way. Younger people are particularly wild about professional football, meaning it probably can continue its dominance for some time.
2. College Football- NCAA Football- In recent years college football has gained popularity as the seasons have been extremely unpredictable. It seems that the fact that smaller schools are now getting better talent and being able to upset the large schools has intrigued fans quite a bit. People in the southern half of the United States are very fond of college football. College football has had some question marks surrounding it with the BCS and the controversy, but it hasn't hurt the loyalty of its fans.
3. Baseball- MLB- Baseball, which is still known as "America's Pastime," has seen a pretty rapid decline in its popularity in the last few years. The number one culprit is obviously the steroids issue, which has fans questioning the integrity of the game as a whole. The east coast areas such as New York and Boston still love baseball, but a lot of the country seems to have frowned upon the last several years. Baseball still has its loyalists, and it certainly could make a comeback in the future.
4. Auto Racing- NASCAR- While Auto Racing as a whole is considered here, by far and away the most popular is NASCAR. NASCAR fans have proven their loyalty, especially in the southern half of the United States. Each week there are thousands of fans camping outside the track for days before the race, just waiting to get the first glimpse of the cars heading onto the track.
5. College Basketball- NCAA Basketball- College basketball fans tend to be a little more loyal than their professional basketball counterparts. College basketball has one major advantage over other sports, the thrill of March Madness. March Madness involves everyone, who fill out the brackets as if they are an expert. The college game is one of lots of passion and emotions.

Post a CommentI think this is more so specific to the city. Fan bases of cities that have a lot of transplants, Ex: DC and Atlanta, are usually subpar.
Hard to argue with that list. #'s 1 and 2 are neck and neck to me. And #5 may be higher depending on where you live.
