Whimsical Ways to Decorate Your Home

Anni Sofferet

You've seen it all before. Homes decorated with flowers and fruit bowls, paintings and pillows. But if you want to say something unique with your decor, why not surround yourself with beautiful things that you find charming? Here's a bundle of ideas for decorating your home with unique objects that will cast a spirit of whimsy over your rooms.

Decorative keys

They look like the keys to old castles, and you can find them in all sorts of sizes and shapes. Look for decorative metal keys in online home decorating stores. Buy between three to five keys and display them in a beautiful ceramic bowl on your entryway table.

Stylish letter opener

Looking more like ornate daggers then letter openers, these old-fashioned blunt knives come in a wide range of shapes and styles. Look for other pieces that will match your letter-opener, such as a magnifying glass. And display these unique objects in a pewter jug, which you can find cheaply at an antique store.

Hats and scarves

At a craft store you'll find cheap straw hats, which you can turn into whimsical decor. How? Buy beautiful silk scarves at a thrift store. Tie a scarf around each hat, then nail the hats to your kitchen wall in a cluster. Or form a line of hats along your hallway wall.

Old-fashioned writing implements

Decorate a writing desk or bedside table with a feather quill and ink well. You'll find old-fashioned writing implements at fine online pen stores. Select a feather color that matches your decor, such as a violet feather for a blue bedroom, or a natural falcon feather for mission style decorating. Finally, add a small pile of old books beside the quill and well to enhance their beauty.

Model sail ships

Miniature sail ships come in a range of sizes and styles. You'll find elegant glass blown ships inside bottles, or wooden ships with wind-swept fabric sails. Display your collection of model sail ships on shelf brackets attached to your wall. And if you paint your shelf brackets to match your wall color, your armada of ships will seem to be sailing on air.

Antique women's shoes

You'll find them at thrift and second hand stores; old high-heeled shoes that seem to belong to another age. Clean the shoes with fabric stain remover. Next replace the old laces with silk ribbons. Then mount a shelf bracket over your bed and display your row of antique shoes for a whimsical effect.

The secret to whimsical decor lies in your imagination. Set your fancy free and you decor will become as creative as you are.
