Whippy Cake - Frosted Treats for Mom and Baby

Zane Ewton
With a name inspired by self-made millionaire author Troy Dunn's Free Samples, the duo of Britta Jarvie and Becki Crosby have taken their whipped topping dreams into a new line of products designed for babies, kids and mom. Balancing production of one-of-a-kind items with establishing a business model from scratch, both Jarvie and Crosby count on enthusiasm and creativity for success.

"Whippy Cake is all the fun and happiness from a cupcake put into fashionable but NON-edible handmade clothing and accessories for baby, child and mom," says Crosby. "We've thought of everything from head to toe including but not limited to: headbands, bows, clips, beanies, earrings, charms, onesies and t-shirts, aprons, nursing covers, baby slings, diaper cases, diaper pads, burp cloths, mini blankets, binki snugs and booties."

Jarvie and Crosby have made all of their designs available at their Web site (www.whippycake.com) and have taken staged their own trunk shows to help spread word about their products. Promoting fun, quality products at reasonable prices.

"No two items are alike," says Jarvie. "We hand make everything so each product is a one of a kind item. We care deeply about the product we provide and therefore put our highest level of quality into our workmanship."

With their current business model, the duo is hard at work but is still able to offer unique items and fulfill special requests. According to Jarvie, in terms of products and ideas, the possibilities are endless.

"We are always brainstorming new ideas and the wheels never stop turning," says Jarvie. "We will always try to cater to the needs of our clients. We encourage our customers to send us their suggestions of items that would benefit from. We love creating and trying out new designs."

Crosby specifically mentions pursuing clothing patterns for some little girl dresses and aprons. While items for men have been discussed, demand has yet to meet supply.

"We would love to offer products for men but we have found that there is not a high demand for adult onesies," says Jarvie.

Crosby adds, "We thought of coming up with something for our "stud muffins" but I think the reality is the only kind of cake men care about is the kind they can eat."

The benefit of developing a new business is the personal touch they are both able to give to their customers.

"We bring whippy cake products to homes or hold trunk shows where our customers can actually see and touch our products first hand and meet with us personally," says Crosby. "We can give them great deals and whippy cake to share with their friends and family. We also try to come up with more agreeable prices. "

The products are not the only sugary sweet elements of the business. Both Crosby and Jarvie have only the best comments to share on their relationship. Crosby compares it to a marriage.

"We definitely make up for each others weaknesses," says Crosby. "I don't know how but it just works out perfectly so that all areas are covered and we both LOVE what we do. Britta has just as, if not more motivated and enthusiasm about whippy cake as I have so we are always on the same page and finishing each others sentences."

"What I lack at Becki excels at and vice versa," says Jarvie. "We are both super motivated and willing to put in the time and effort to make our business work. But I feel very lucky to have Becki as my business partner and know that as our business grows, so will our ability to work as a team."

With work duties, and a brand new baby boy in the Crosby home, creative ideas are the least of their worries.

"The biggest challenge has been finding enough time to get everything done," says Jarvie. "Since we are still in the beginning stages of developing and finalizing the details as well as creating the products, we struggle for enough time to complete what we need. Since our minds never stop working we always feel like there is more to be done. It definitely makes for late nights and early mornings."
