Come One, Come Dogs

Nora Beane
The "Whisker Walk", 2010 in Lancaster, MA welcomes all dogs with their dog loving owners to come together for a family friendly gathering on behalf of canines throughout the New England Area. While the concept of "Whisker Walk" may seem a little bizarre it really is a natural spin-off of other fund raising walks held during the spring, summer and fall in this part of the country.

Folks in Massachusetts are well used to major fund raising events on behalf of a wide variety of charitable causes. For example, on the first Sunday of May each year Project Bread sponsors the annual Walk for Hunger, a 20 mile walking extravaganza that annually raises hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of soup kitchens, food banks and overnight shelters. Throughout spring, summer and fall, walkathons are held to aid the search for cures for all types of human ailments. It was only a matter of time before dog lovers saw the worth of conducting a similar such event on behalf of canines across the state and throughout the New England region.

This year the "Whisker Walk" will be held at Lancaster Fairgrounds ( used for the Bolton Fair ) in Lancaster, MA. Don't be afraid to whip out your GPS and get yourself to Lancaster on Sunday, June 6 from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. for a cavalcade of dog related activities that are fun and family friendly.

The Fairgrounds in Lancaster spreads out over 50 acres. When you arrive you will find the grounds covered with vendors of food and all things dog related. As you wander about you will encounter information booths, educational offerings, games and contests that can get everyone involved.

At noon walkers will step off along a simple, flat and well shaded path that is perfect for dog lovers, dog owners and yes, well behaved and well managed pets. The "Whisker Walk" can offer you, your family and your pet(s) a chance to hang with other folks who are similarly inclined. Oh and don't worry this is no 20 mile jaunt. The "Whisker Walk" will only demand one mile from your busy feet.

You can be a part of the action. The gathering itself is free. But the walk and resulting pledges can provide the opportunity to raise money for dog shelters and care centers around the state and the region. It is uplifting to see that already some big name sponsors have signed on to aid the causes associated with the "Whisker Walk".
Several local dog shelters, radio stations, newspapers and even Boston's own Chanel 5 have thrown their support to the Walk and Chanel 5 has actively featured the event during its broadcast day.

The season for walkathons is a long one and there will be plenty of options for you to get out in support of your favorite causes. If one of your special interests happens to be dogs, find more information on the " Whisker Walk" website and plan yourself a fun Sunday. And by the way, do you suppose those who scheduled the event realized that June 6 commemorates D-day. Possibly they saw that as a sign - after all what else could D stand for but Dog?
