Towards God we lift our hands,
We weary few.
They have taken from us our lives,
Our shoes and hair and clothes and food,
But still we stand
On withered limbs and quivering knees
For to fall would make us less than human
And naught but the shadows they would have us be.
Towards freedom we will trudge and march
And carry the ones who cannot walk
To stand at walls of chain and stone
And stare out into the eyes of those
Who turn their backs on God.
Take our hands, Lord,
And lift us free,
Deliver us, deliver us,
Or let our breath slip away in the night
That we may stand once more in peace and light.
