White Castle Hamburger Sliders

They Are Delicious Little Treat that Many People Are Not Aware Of

Jay Braun
I actually got the idea for this story when I was watching the CBS Television Show Undercover Boss. There was an episode where David Rife, the CEO of White Castle, went undercover in his stores in order to see what the people think. Not only was it a good show, but the burgers are delicious and reminded me of how much I really wanted once since I had not had one in quite awhile.

White Castle was founded in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas. They are a regional restaurant located mostly in the Midwest and Northeastern United States. Contrary to popular opinion they used the square hamburger before Wendy's. They are basically a hamburger joint that has fries, a couple sides, fish, a chicken nugget like product called Chicken Rings, soda and shakes, and a breakfast menu. The main item is their Signature burgers they call a Slider. In addition to their restaurants they also have their hamburgers and cheeseburger sliders available in various grocery stores throughout the country. That is how I usually get a slider when I don't feel like driving 45 minutes to the nearest location.

If you do not like onions or are allergic to them then I will say first and foremost that White Castle Sliders are not for you. The burgers are steamed on top of a bed of grilled onions. They are similar to call them fried like McDonald's, but they are not flipped during cooking and the buns are steamed on top of them. There is only one thing I like to see pink in and burgers are not it (thought I would get a laugh out of that one), but they do get done. This is in large part because of holes put in the burgers prior to cooking and the fact that they are extremely thin. There are a variety of toppings that are available on them, but the standard slider has a bun, burger, onions, cheese and pickles. Some restaurants put ketchup and or mustard on them others make them all the same way for speed.

Like I mentioned there are a wide variety of the slider you can get. There is a plain slider (hamburger). You can also get any slider as a double version. In addition to hamburger, called a White Castle or cheeseburger they also have bacon cheeseburgers and a Jalapeño Cheese Burger that replaces the American cheese with a spicy jalapeño jack cheese. You can also get fish, chicken, or Chicken Rings on a slider bun. Their breakfast sandwiches come on either toast or the hamburger bun.

I mostly eat their sliders and really like them. I would describe the taste as a cross between a McDonald's Cheeseburger and a generic cheese steak with fried onions. Their fries are crinkle cut. The fries are ok, but I much prefer McDonald's fries. Their milkshakes are just like every other fast food that you may try as are their drinks. I personally do not like their Chicken rings, but many people really like them. If you want to try something new I would recommend trying White Castle. You can probably find them in the freezer section of your grocery store if you are not close enough to one. If you are down south they have something called Krystal are essentially made the same way, but Krystal has a much more expanded menu.
