White Crosses on a Hillside

Memorial Day 2011

White crosses, spread with flowers
Stretch out over a hillside,
As far as the eye can see.
People talk, people pray,
As they climb up the hillside,
With arms full of flowers,
And eyes bright with tears.
Flags snapping in the breeze,
Cover the hillside
In a red, white and blue salute,
To the heroes, who slumber
Beneath the soil,
Who died to keep this land free!

Did ragged lightning streaks
Illuminate the the road to Calvary?
Did booming thunder challenge the limits of sound,
As Christ staggered and stumbled,
Carrying a cross that was too heavy for man?
Our soldiers advanced, then were hurled back,
As bullets ripped through the sand.
Each hero has his story of his own moment of glory,
To be told of their road to Calvary Land.
So now they rest beneath the sod, on a hillside,
Dotted with white crosses covered with flowers,
As far as the heart can feel...

    "as far as the heart could feel", this is a line that will remain with me for the rest of my life, what a poem Mary,the sacrifice of the soldiers, and the climb to the hill as Christ carrying the cross lifts that burden and walk of grief from our shoulders...an amazing poem, it brought tears to my eyes, beautiful Mary...
