Have you ever visited the White House Visitor center in Washington, DC? If not, next time you are in the DC area you should put this on your list to visit. It showcases the white house throughout history and included in this are some exclusive pictures of past President's and their children. It also includes a small exhibit of famous White House pet photo's.

One of the best pet photograph's depicts Kennedy with his children and the little girl is on a horse. President Taft at one time even had a cow grazing on the White House lawn. Several presidents have brought their charming dogs and regal cats with them to the White House during their terms.

When children move into the White House, America can expect to see some kid friendly changes to the grounds. Obama has already placed a beautiful swing set on the grounds for his little girls to enjoy. There is talk they may have a new member of the family soon, if the president and his wife decide to get the girls a puppy.

What other ways is the White House kid friendly? Throughout history, on more than one occasion the White House has become home to children. How did they enjoy the huge mansion? Were there things there to keep them occupied?

The latest swing set addition is only the newest comfort of home added for a White House child's benefit. Throughout the years minor changes have occurred at the White House as a result of different families that have lived there and the changes they brought. In 1975 Gerald Ford had an outdoor pool and cabana installed. Later, when the Clinton's moved in they added an outdoor spa.

Woodrow Wilson in 1915 was the first president to use the White House movie theater. During Laura Bush's stay in the White House, the theater underwent renovations. It is now a gorgeous room decorated with red seating. The front rows are recliners so the guests can lean back and enjoy whatever is being filmed. George used this room for more than movie viewings, as there are several pictures where he is speaking in the room and entertaining guests. George Bush had an outdoor basketball court put in at the White House in 1991. The basketball court was his third addition to the grounds of the white house as in prior years he had the Tennis court from previous administrations enlarged and horseshoes installed.

It has been said that some children, such as Hoover's children, roller skated in certain areas of the home. President Carter helped his daughter build a tree house on the White House grounds. President Johnson and his wife dedicated a garden play area for children to play in. During the first Bush presidency, his grand daughters and grandson left their hand-prints on the walkway of this garden. Nixon had a one lane bowling alley put in the basement of the White House.

While children have lived in the White House throughout history, young children are few and far between for the home. Sasha and Malia bring new life to the White House. It will be refreshing to see the changes they bring to the historical home with things such as swing sets and play rooms.
