Being an independent development company, Level-5 also worked on several products without Sony as the publisher. These games include Dragon Quest VIII and IX in addition to the Professor Layton series. After one hit game after another, Level-5 quickly rose to become one of the most recognizable developers in Japan.
White Knight Chronicles for the Playstation 3 is their most ambitious project yet. Although it was first shown in late 2006, it wouldn't be released in Japan until two years later. North American gamers will have to wait even longer as White Knight Chronicles won't arrive in the west until early 2010.
White Knight Chronicles was a huge undertaking for Level-5. Not only do they have to deal with working on the high-definition power of the Playstation 3, they also needed to implement online multiplayer gameplay in addition to an epic single-player campaign mode. This caused the game to be delayed in Japan for lengthy periods. Not to mention that Level-5 had to release several patches post-launch for White Knight Chronicles.
The Playstation 3 exclusive game won't be the same game when it launches in North America next year. This is because Level-5 is planning to include several new features during the localization process in White Knight Chronicles. Most of the problems in the Japanese version will be addressed. Not to mention that several new features (like a town-building mode similar to the Dark Cloud series) will be added.
Although they are planning for a North American release of White Knight Chronicles on the Playstation 3, Level-5 already has a sequel in mind. Not much is known about the sequel other than that it is confirmed. Given that Level-5 already have an engine built for the Playstation 3, however, White Knight Chronicles 2 shouldn't take as long to developed as White Knight Chronicles.
A new RPG game is always a welcomed addition for a system that lacks depth in the genre. White Knight Chronicles will be released in early 2010 exclusively on the Playstation 3 in North America. Don't expect White Knight Chronicles 2 to arrive in North America until 2011 at the earliest.
