One of the first things that I have learned about mixed raced relationships is many black women don't even consider them as a possibility. This is possibly best illustrated by one of the first things my girlfriend said to me and that was "I didn't think you would like me because I am black" but I wasn't even thinking about it like that. To me we were just two adults who found each other attractive. In my experience this reaction is not at all unusual. I think it's important to break down the racial divide and bring people closer together. My personal opinion is that mixed race relationships should be embraced.
It's my opinion that when considering a relationship the color of someone's skin should not be an issue. When I was growing up and thinking about the qualities my ideal woman would have and the color of her skin was not a concern. Of course I never thought of it again until I met my girlfriend. When we did meet I saw beauty not color and as we started our relationship the fact that we were of a different race was not an issue. Even five years on it's still not an issue to us, but other people will make it an issue.
A component of the way we live is that we are so wrapped up on everyone's opinion on us. I'm sure if a random survey was done a large proportion of people would not even consider a mixed race relationship purely on the basis of a poor reaction from family and friends. I think this is sad and I am a firm believer in following the heart.
After being in a mixed raced relationship I know that there can be opposition. This can come in a variety of forms. Firstly there is opposition from friends and family and then there is opposition from society. Opposition from friends and family can be difficult, but family should come around eventually. Friends are important to everyone, but it's important that friends are supportive. Receiving opposition from the general public is irritating, but at least it's only a problem when out and about. Now this is sad, but opposition can also come from the workplace, but that might also say a lot about the ethics of the company. In general opposition is annoying, but most people can be ignored and I have found that people who really love and care about me will be supportive. Opposition can be overcome, but it's important to be aware that it's out there.
It's important that any opposition encountered doesn't become a problem. Some people just can't handle it and break up just to make their families happy. I believe it's important to remember that the most important people are the ones involved in the relationship. I wouldn't break up with someone due to opposition from my family. Also for anyone reading this who is considering breaking up remember no relationship is perfect. Opposition from family can just as easily come about due to age or class differences. Mixed raced relationships can be complicated and they can face opposition, but no relationship is simple. My advice would be embrace what is good and the bad will no longer matter.
In my opinion the secret to a happy relationship is to focus about what is really good. Firstly it's really exciting as you begin to learn about each other it can be like reading a really good book or watching a unique movie. Dating can become easy as your partner may have not done or experienced things someone from the same country or race would have. Personally I am open to new experiences with my girlfriend because she has done something unique before. Also remember not everything will be different, but do things enjoyable. Both myself and my girlfriend loves sport I like watching soccer, but she is not so keen. However we both enjoy tennis and cricket. We also both enjoy movies and that is something else we can enjoy that together.
Mixed raced relationships can be really beautiful especially between individuals who come from a different culture as well as a different race. This is one of the things I truly love being able to learn about another culture. Around the world we all do things slightly different and it's so wonderful to be able to learn about the differences. My girlfriend comes from a different country which makes things exciting as we can visit each other country while having our own personal tour guide. Then after that we could look into each other heritage, so for the purposes of this article this may include a visit to Africa. Aside from that the learning can continue with each other for instance in some relationships partners may speak another language that the other person does not or have a different style of cuisine. The options are endless and these differences can really add that extra spice to a mixed raced relationship. Not only that, but ideas for holiday destinations are easy to come by.
Racial issues are usually seen slightly differently between blacks and whites. Whites will underplay racism and will usually put it down to something else. Blacks will overplay it and attribute many things to racism even when it is clear it has nothing to do with it. The reality is in the middle somewhere there is more racism than whites think, but not as much as blacks assume. With all this in mind it's a difficult issue, so proceed with caution. Above all show sensitivity. General rules of a good relationship apply here support her. It may be a good idea to explore other options as well because discrimination and opposition can arrive in many forms.
Don't forget basic rules of a good relationship. Amongst the excitement of the mixed raced relationship it's easy to forget about the important issues in any relationship. Remember to show care, interest and discuss issues. Above all really get to know each other and be committed to making the relationship work. I would also suggest discussing issues that are likely to come up such as religion and cultural for children.
A mixed raced relationship can have challenges, but if it's what you want go after it. Most people will get opposition from friends and family, but in my experience these problems can be overcome and family and friends will usually be supportive. Any opposition on the street can be quickly ignored especially if you quickly realize that they are the ones with the problem. Embrace each other's culture and try to learn as much about them and their culture as you can. Share your common interests and most of all enjoy each other's company.
I hope my article was enjoyable I have tried to give a balanced view of a mixed raced relationship. I don't want it to seem all good or all bad, but it is a relationship with challenges. I believe in being with the right person and a mixed raced relationship can be beautiful. A mixed raced relationship should be acceptable or at least as acceptable as any other sort of relationship. From a personal point of view I am proud of my relationship and consider it beautiful. I find little to complain about and any challenges we embrace. The most important things are there are shared feelings, morals and values as well as common interests.
Mixed raced relationships are healthy when shared between two people who are right for one another. I expect most people to date within their own race, but there is nothing wrong with looking outside. Don't be scared of dating someone outside of a certain race as that person might be the one. I found myself in the situation where I was drawn to a beautiful black woman and I didn't deny it. I feel so grateful about the choice I made. I proudly state mixed raced relationships can not only work, but also can be amazing. Finally remember although there can be challenges the good certainly outweighs the bad as long as there is a strong connection.
