"White Men Can't Jump" - Basketball's Greatest Comedy Movie

Who ever thought that back in March of 1992 that director Ron Shelton could come up with a comedy that stars two different personalities, portray them in the typical black and white stereotypes and end up with an all time great basketball film. White Men Can't Jump is by far one of my favorite basketball movies because it brings down to earth not just a true love of the sport but the love of life and the reality life is offering two different people in two different ways. It is a true classic that shows no matter what background differences people come from or have, that everyone can get along with one another only if we share a love of one thing. Find that common ground and build relationships and friendships that can last a lifetime.

White Men Can't Jump originally was released back in March of 1992 staring the ever so popular Wesley Snipes who played Sidney Deane. Snipes pairs up with one of the greatest actors and directors known to man, Woody Harrelson. Woody plays the character Billy Hoyle and Billy and Sidney begin to think since they have skills on the court they can become great basketball hustlers in town. The only thing that was going to stop them was each other!

Once Sidney realizes that Billy owes money to a pair of gangsters for gambling, Sidney bails on him and so does his girlfriend Gloria which is played by Rosie Perez. After soul searching and Sidney realizing he needs Billy on the court with him, they end up working together to make a great team and and to help out Billy's money problem by earning money on the court. A team that is unstoppable due to the fact their egos were pushed to the side.

One of my favorite parts in the movie ended up being my favorite quote in life. Sidney and Billy were competing on the court in a friendly game of one on one and of course the ego's were flying high. Sidney said to Billy, "You see Billy it's like this, you either smoke or you get smoked. And you got smoked." and to this day I still use the saying "you got smoked'!

If you have never seen this movie, and I can not believe you haven't yet, then I suggest you get out to your local video store and rent it as soon as possible. I am sure it will turn into an all time favorite basketball classic movie for you as well!
