White Noise: The Light (2007) Movie Review

I remember seeing the original "White Noise" in theatres back in January 2005. Even though I own it on DVD, the last time I watched it was in the theatres. So my memory of it isn't 100% clear but I remember thinking it was decent but could have been better. The trailer was much better. I can't say I was excited to sit down and watch the sequel "White Noise: The Light", even though the great Nathan Fillion is in it. I'm glad I did though; it ended up being pretty good.

Other then the mention of EVP there is no connections to the original film. I wasn't expecting much out of it but I ended up getting an interesting ghost story. After his family is gunned down and a failed attempt at suicide, a man discovers his near death accident has caused him to see whose about to die. He begins saving lives, but this is no superhero flick, so his heroic deeds come at a price. Of course the sights of ghosts don't help matters. The movie got more interesting throughout and couldn't help but much, I wanted to see the entire outcome of the film. It's helped by Nathan Fillion's excellent performance. His likable and believable attitude helped the film, a lot. The film was backed up with beautiful imagery including those gnarly ghosts and the scene where Fillion's character heads toward the light. What a great sequence! Let's not forget the solid directing by Patrick Lussier, the moody music score and the ballsy ending. Also props to Lussier for the piano sequence. Great shit! White Noise: The Light ended up being far better then I thought and had a story that I was interested in following.

Nathan Fillion (Abe Dale) was extremely solid and likable as the lead. Great Job. Kate Sackhoff (Sherry Clarke) also came off as likable and was cute to boot. Her scenes with Fillion were great.

Patrick Lussier's directing was on the ball when it came it style and suspense. The scene involving a piano (no spoiling here, sorry) was excellent and used slow-mo at its best. Great Job.

We get a moody and at times, creepy music score. Good stuff.

Except for a messed up face and some gnarly ghosts, nothing here to write home about. The film doesn't really need it.

Any complaints? Well I wished the film would have developed Fillion's and Sachoff's characters relationships a little further. Needed to be fleshed out some more. Also more of Fillion saving people would have been killer.

In the end, this film was far better then I imagined. It has an interesting and engaging premise and solid acting and directing. I recommend hunting it down in the USA when it's released.
