White Russian Cocktails: My Drink of Choice When in Las Vegas

My Winning White Russian

Theresa O'Keefe
The White Russian drink is one of my favorite cocktails. I enjoy many different cocktails, but this is my favorite cocktail when I'm gambling in Las Vegas. If you're a "true" gambler then you know never to mix cocktails with games that require thought like poker or Black Jack. I too follow that "rule." However, if I'm taking my chances at the slot machines then I will imbibe in a White Russian or two or three or more.

One day I was in Las Vegas, playing a slot machine that had a bonus game that was in levels. So, here I am on White Russian number "whatever," and all of a sudden the machine won't take my money. It turns out I've made it to the bonus round. I was only playing .25 cents on this game, so it's not like I had invested my lifesavings. The bonus on this particular game had a total of nine rounds. Every time you'd win a round you'd go to the next level.

I'm not sure how the server managed to do this, but she came around with a fresh White Russian drink at the beginning of each new round. After 4 rounds I decided in my intoxicated state she was my lucky charm. Round after round I was winning and round after round those White Russians kept coming. I actually made it to round 9 and walked away winning over $300.00 on a .25 cent bet, and I'm sure I drank at least $60 to $100 worth of White Russian cocktails (if I'd would have been at the bar paying for them). Let's just say when I was done I happily stumbled up to hotel room, and tried to count my winnings, but didn't get too far. I realized the true value of my windfall the next morning.

If you would like to create one of these yummy concoctions here's a simple White Russian Recipe:

2 ounces of good quality vodka (my favorite is Grey Goose)

1 ounce of Kahlua (or any coffee flavored liqueur, but Kahlua is so darn yummy)

1 ounce of cream (preferably heavy cream, but half and half will do)

Pour the ingredients into a shaker over ice. Mix it all up and then strain into a highball glass. If you buy this drink at bar, make you tell them how to make it correctly. They like to pour it over ice and then have YOU stir the drink. As the ice melts you'll have a watered down drink and it changes the flavor of the cocktail. Made correctly it tastes like a grown up latte. Enjoy!
