The Poconos in Pennsylvania Have Great Whitewater Rafting Adventures

The Pocono Whitewater Rafting is located in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania right on Route 903 South in the Poconos and is easily accessible from New Jersey and New York via Route 80 West. The Pocono Whitewater offers mild to wild whitewater conditions depending on your skill level. They also offer a family package which is an eight mile ride which takes anywhere from three to four hours to complete. This is considered their mild ride with just a few of their Class II rapids. The family package also includes a free BBQ lunch. Families with children ages four and over are welcome. The adult rate is $39.95 per person, children ages four through fourteen is $29.95 per person. Included is all equipment, life jackets, and free shuttle to and from the river.

The Gateway Whitewater is a combination of Class II and III rapids. Here they have time-released rapids which are controlled rapids designed to give you a great ride. This package is geared for children ages six and up. It is a ten mile ride. Expect about four hours for this trip down the Lehigh River. You can even stop and swim at the designated areas throughout the course. The Gateway Whitewater for any participant age six and older is $49.95. This includes life jacket, free parking, river guides and shuttle to and from the river.

The Lehigh Gorge Whitewater package is their longest trip, lasting five hours as you ride down twelve miles of river, cruising through 17 rapids. You can take this adventure during their dam release times or daily throughout the summer. The price is $59.99 per person ages eight and up. Equipment and life jackets are included, free parking and free shuttle service.

Reservations are recommended at least two weeks in advance with a $15.00 per person deposit with a credit card, check or money order. Full payment is expected ten days prior to your selected date. Any cancellations must be made ten days prior to your trip will be refunded or rescheduled.

Whitewater Challengers is located on 288 North Stagecoach Road in Weatherly, Pennsylvania. You can ride the Lehigh River as a beginner or expert. They offer several packages and if you choose, you can camp over nite with them on site. Their rafting is open every day from April through October. Whitewater Challengers also offers rafting on dam release dates as well. However, during the Spring and Fall the river runs more rapid, even without the dam release.

Prices for rafting with dam release whitewater is $54.95 per person ages nine and up. Expect to spend three to four hours on the river. Cost for children ages six through eight is $44.95 per person. No one under six is permitted to ride the rapids. There is also a package for ages nine and up at $58.95 per person during the dam release schedule as well.

During the Summer Whitewater Challengers offers a $78.95 per person package with dam release dates. This is a six to eight hour trip on the river and you must be age 10 or older to participate.

Regular rapid rides are also available for various ride lengths, age restrictions and package fees. The youngest a child can be to ride the rapids is age five during July and August. The price is $26.95 per person ages five to fourteen. Fifteen and older is $36.95 per person. This does not include dam release dates.

The Middle Youghiogheny Rapids is geared for the family, ages five and older. The length is eleven miles with ten mild but fun rapids, Class I and II. Open March through October, adult rates, ages twelve and up is $32.00 per person weekdays, and higher on the weekends. Children under twelve during the week is $27.00 per person and higher during the weekends.

The Lower Youghiogheny Rapids is Class III with just over seven miles of river, containing twenty-two rapids, of which eight are the biggest. This package takes approximately three to five hours to complete. Rafting begins in March and ends in October. Prices vary depending on weekday, weekend and month you choose to ride the rapids. Summer costs are $43.00 per person weekdays, $50.00 per person on Fridays, $73.00 per person on Saturdays and $58.00 per person on Sundays. Ages twelve and up and welcomed on the Lower Yough Rapids.

The Cheat River Rapids is a Class IV and V river. Minimum age requirement is age fourteen. Expect to spend four to six hours on this eleven mile river. Ride twenty fun packed rapids. Prices from March to June are $71.00 per person weekdays, $89.00 per person on Saturdays and $77.00 on Sundays.

Finally, the Upper Yough Rapids is all Class V. This is a whitewater guide-included trip geared for ages sixteen and up. Get wet as you go through twenty-five rapids on an eleven mile course. Expect to spend three to five hours on the raging river. Previous whitewater experience is recommended for choosing the Upper Yough Rapids. Saturday price is $150.00 per person and Weekday fees are $126.00 per person
