Whitey Bulger's $2 Million Reward Goes to Tipster; Neighbors Shocked

How many people are kicking themselves for missing the fact that their neighbor, the man that shops at their store, or the guy who frequents the same barber shop was Whitey Bulger? They have missed out on the $2 million reward and the other $100, 000 that goes for Bulger's girlfriend, Catherine Greig.

No one identified Bulger and Greig as a mob boss and his mistress because they hid in plain sight and they blended right in. One neighbor in particular thought they were very nice people and is having a hard time believing her friend and neighbor was really the cold-blooded killer described in all the newspapers, according to Fox News.

Bulger, who was going under the assumed name of Charles Gasko, often spoke with Denise Walsh, a neighbor of his for five years. They had the love of animals in common, Walsh said. She called him the "grandfatherly type" neighbor, who would stop and pet her dog, according to the Boston Globe.

Another neighbor befriended Greig, who went under the alias of Carol Gasko. Greig had confided in this neighbor that Bulger was depressed and could not sleep at night. He could only sleep during the day. Greig also told her she thought that he was showing signs of Alzheimer's.

While neither of the neighbors mentioned they missed out of the chance at becoming a millionaire twice over, if only they had recognized the reputed mob boss, another man who met Bulger a few years back is talking about his missed chance of becoming a millionaire.

A Christian Scientist Monitor staff recognized Bulger this week as they showed the picture of him at the apartment house where he was living. He had vacationed in the beach community near where Bulger was living and talked to him one day. He described Bulger as icy and he was very abrupt in answering a question the staffer asked him.

Bulger appeared to be a local and he asked him if the cops ticket around here for cars parked on the street. Bulger answered back, "yup" and that was the extent of that conversation. What would life be like today with the reward money if he had noticed him?

According to the FBI, someone is going to get the $2 million reward for the tip they gave the FBI, which resulted in the capture of both Bulger and Greig. The same person will also collect the $100,000 reward offered for Greig. That person's name has not been released, but the capture is a direct result of the new campaign the FBI started last week.

Instead of targeting Bulger, they targeted an audience that might have seen Greig. Along with Bulger, they put her picture all over daytime television. They wanted to reach the audience that might see her in the beauty parlor, in the markets and anywhere else a woman would go doing her daily activities. This worked and one of the tips called in resulted in both Bulger and Greig's arrest.
