Whitney Cummings Goes Too Far on Justin Bieber's Abortion Comment

Valerie Ferrari
Joy Behar has had a bee in her bonnet about a Justin Bieber quote (or at least part of it) from the Rolling Stone magazine article: "Justin Bieber: The Adventures of Superboy" by Vanessa Grigoriadis.

Just so you know I'm not just cutting and pasting the quote from any old where, I am sitting here with the March 3, 2011 issue because your faithful correspondent has a subscription to Rolling Stone, (which also entitles me to read it online but I never do).

Regarding abortion, Bieber says: "I really don't believe in abortion. I think [an embryo] is a human. It's like killing a baby."

Grigoriadis bring up the rape and incest scenarios, Bieber says: "Well, I think that's just really sad, but everything happens for a reason. I don't how that would be a reason." Grigoriados writes that he looks confused but continues: "I guess I haven't been in that position, so I wouldn't be able to judge that."

Then the conversation turns to war and how Bieber thinks we all should just "get along."

When she first heard about it, Joy took offense at the "everything happens for a reason" part of the conversation on The View. She continued with it on her talk show on Friday, February 18th, when she brought Rebecca Dane of the Daily Beast on with comedians, Whitney Cummings and Bill Bellamy.

It didn't go too well.

"This idea that everything happens for a reason is ridiculous," Joy said, "I mean, how do you explain tsunamis ... How do you explain the Octomom?"

Billy Bellamy said that the Octomom happened for a reason and Whitney Cummings added "8 reasons."

Cummings added: "the thing is that with "whatever happened for a reason" it's such a cop out. He clearly did not know what to say, but everything does happen for a reason, like Justin Bieber happened to ruin culture. That was the reason he happened -- and to make me feel old."

"Everybody should have an opinion," Joy said, "but he's 16 years old and he's talking about rape and incest victims and these young girls listen to this 'haircut,' you know what I mean?"

Bill Bellamy said they needed to be careful about what they say about Justin Bieber because "Bieber has superpowers" and "he'll shut you down."

Paying that no mind, Whitney Cummings at least admitted that she did not read the Rolling Stone article: "I don't know what the questions were exactly, you know what I mean? I might have got them misconstrued but if I were the journalist, I just would have been like, 'hey, why didn't you get aborted'."

Joy, Billy Bellamy and Rebecca Dane all collectively moaned at that one, and Whitney scoffed: "Oh, too far. Too far on the comedy show."

Maybe Joy Behar didn't know that Whitney Cummings has a reputation for going too far even at celebrity roasts, where you're supposed to insult people, but Joy Behar quickly and wisely changed the topic.

Rebecca Dane's contribution was to say the thing she fears most is a Bieber/Palin alliance because Bieber's fans are almost voting age and that could put Sarah Palin in the White House. Such faith in American youth, Rebecca.

Whitney's comment was over the top, but the whole conversation was pointless. This is what happens when you hear or read a quote out of context. I must admit when I first heard about the article on Showbiz Tonight, I was put off by the comment that Americans "are evil' and wanted to personally escort the Biebs to Vermont and give him a swift kick over the border. But in the article itself, it's clear he was only joking.

Joy is/was /will always be ready to get "mounted" by a popular phenomenon like Bieber. Now, he has found out , like Tim Tebow before him,- when you dare to be honest or fail the liberal's litmus test the daggers are drawn quickly.

Sheesh, it is getting way out in bizarro land the way that adult talk show hosts and news reporters are pawing all over kids and every nuance of what the kids say, do and think.
And those kids are easy targets and fodder for the media.
It's like trying to kill a fly with a baseball bat and not very challenging at that. Some adults should be ashamed of themselves and play with their own kind.

I say, he's still just a kid, superstar or not, give him time to grow up before you ask his opinion on serious matters.
