Whitney Houston on Oprah: What's the Buzz?

Valerie Ferrari
In the first part of Whitney's two-part interview with Oprah Winfrey, as expected, Whitney and Oprah discussed her drug use and "emotionally abusive" marriage to rap singer, Bobby Brown. Whitney and Oprah continued in that vein for a little over the first half hour of the second interview. They did talk about Michael Jackson, showing a clip of Ms. Houston looking much worse than the King of Pop, while claiming to either be worried about him or ending up like him (not sure which). Whitney Houston then came out and performed for Oprah's audience, bringing Oprah to tears in the audience.

The two hour special certainly set tongues wagging and I have collected several comments from blogdom, both encouraging and otherwise, to give you the latest buzz on Oprah's most famous recovery story. I only edited the comments for spelling so I didn't have to keep typing [sic].

On Necole Bitchie's blog, Big Booty Goddess said: "Whitney was using drugs before Bobby ... I did not like that interview worth a blazin' poop. She was using before him. Drugs addict gravitate towards other addicts and that's what she did when she got with him. She knew he was using, talking about she was in shock, oh please ... Oprah did a special with New Edition before he married her and Bobby was on drugs then, and after he married her, Oprah had New Edition on and he spoke about his drug use and she was filming The Body Guard. I love Whitney and I'm glad she is back, but take responsibility for your own drug use."

On the "I'm Not Obsessed" blog, Yayi says: "It was a great interview. I really hope she can stay clean and build her life back up. This Bobby Brown guy is a human garbage."

Talk show host, Wendy Williams weighed in on the side that felt Whitney was blaming her ex-husband too much. "What I was looking for from Whitney was ownership, and I didn't see it," Williams told her audience. "... she didn't own her habit, she's still blaming Bobby and the world."

On the TV Squad Blog, Gordy says: "Just pray you never have to go through it. It sucks living in an awful marriage, especially when the alpha female is 10x more successful than the alpha male. Because I swore off trash TV in the 90s [Jerry Springer] I never watched Being Bobby Brown, but I could relate to her insights in this interview. You'd be amazed how low you will go when you're trying to be loved and accepted. Regarding Oprah 'feeding her words', sometimes it takes that. Ask anyone who has ever sat with a therapist. Whitney's responses -- though scripted at times -- appeared to be truthful."

My own take on the show, in case you're still interested, is that her recovery story sounds somewhat shaky. I found her comment that you may see her in a bar having an alcoholic drink strange indeed. Oprah's agreement that alcohol wasn't a problem for Whitney was even stranger. It's certainly not standard recovery speak or advice. I think you are supposed to swear off all stimulants, or you are believed to be just trading one addictive substance for another.

I also found "the milk and sugar" story quite bizarre. According to Whitney in 2006, she told Bobby Brown she was going to the store for milk and sugar, but caught a plane to Los Angeles and left him instead. Maybe she meant cocaine cut with milk sugar. The mental picture I get of Whitney telling Bobby Brown: "I'm going out to get some milk and sugar, hon," is so hilarious. But, I don't know ... maybe she did do her own shopping back in the day.

I know they had a very nice Kings Supermarket in Mendham, NJ. I sometimes miss Shoprite down here in Texas. Wonder if Whitney ever misses Kings?
