Who Burns More Fat? Men or Women?

Johnny Moon
While men and women are certainly equals they are not equal physically. We're just not build the same way. Our bodies are different inside and out. There are hormone differences in men and women's bodies. These hormone differences effect the way our bodies process food and our balance of muscle and fat.

The more muscle someone has the more calories they burn. For every pound of muscle you burn 50 calories a day while the same pound of fat will burn only 2 calories a day. This is why a bodybuilder can eat many thousands of calories and not gain any fat. While an obese person could eat comparatively very little and be over eating.

This pertains to the differences between men and women and why on average men do burn more fat than women. Men are naturally more muscular than women due to their higher testosterone levels. Testosterone causes hair growth and deepens the voice. It also causes muscle growth.

Because of a woman's natural lack of muscle it is much easier for women to gain extra weight and it is also much harder for them to burn off extra weight that they have gained.

Today of course more than ever people are obsessed with being thin. Celebrity women are thinner than ever it seems. And it seems too many women want to be just like these extremely thin celebrities. This leads to many bad decisions such as starving one self which only makes the body latch on to whatever fat it has and can actually make it much harder to lose weight in the long run.

It's a bad idea to starve yourself to try and lose weight. The importance of muscle for long term health cannot be overstated. Just starving yourself and becoming rail thin does not mean that you are healthy. You should combine a healthy diet (not starving yourself but not over eating either) with an exercise routine that is not just cardio. Too many women think weight lifting is for men. No. Women need weight lifting even more than men. Men are naturally muscular.

Too many women also think that they are going to bulk up and be "too muscular" if they lift a few weights. This is crazy. It's not that easy to get "too muscular." It's not going to happen from lifting a few barbells.

So in conclusion, the answer is that yes men do burn more calories and more fat than women naturally. But there's a lesson in this fact. Women who wish to have real weight loss and body change need to make muscle building a top priority. Starvation is not the way towards long term weight loss!
