Who Cares About the Oscar or Academy Awards?
Do You Watch the Academy Award to See Who Wins the Oscar or Tune Out?
Why did it take me so long to discover this? It took so many years because I didn't care about the Oscars. I also do not believe that the average person cares about the Oscars. For me the Academy Awards is an award show that seems to only care about dramas, a genre that I rarely watch. If a movie is boring, long, and overacted then it is just perfect to win an Oscar. Granted there probably have been some good movies that have won an Oscar but off the top of my head I can't think of any.
In recent years the Oscar ceremony itself has been going downhill and has dropped in the ratings, which is hardly surprising. The only thing that people tend to care about or remember is how the women were dress, who was wearing what, and "Oh my God, didn't she look in the mirror before leaving the house?"
Days after the Academy Awards have come and gone the only memory is the glossy cover of magazines who are hoping for a jump in sale for people wanting the latest fashions and snooty critiques. If a celebrity does something a little wacky at the Academy Awards or something record breaking happens then people might talk about the Oscar show itself for a few days but generally within a day or two the Oscars is quickly forgotten.
The most talked about Oscar goody are the swags. Bags filled with tens of thousands of dollars worth of electronics, clothing, jewelry and spa treatments are given out usually to the losers at the Academy Awards and when they bordered on a hundred thousand dollars in 2006, the IRS finally decided that they would start taxing these Oscar swags.
The taxing of Oscar swag bags caused such an uproar you would have thought that these celebrities would only make $19 million dollars instead of the usually $20 million or more on their next film project. The majority of us regular folks do not make $100,000 in two makes much less a day and yet they are complaining about paying taxes that the rest of us have to pay.
If celebrities want to blame anyone then they should blame the people who give such lavish gifts at the Academy Awards, to people who can already afford them. Most celebrities could probably care less considering that they have enough money to buy whatever they want. Celebrity assistants are the ones who usually benefits since many of them get their pick of the Oscar swag if not the entire gift bag.
Even worse than the acceptance speeches are the musical performances. Each Oscar number more boring than the last. Pop and R&B singer Beyonce once performed four times at one Oscar show and a quick glance YouTube was enough to tell me that I could easily have a better time getting a root canal. What I don't want is to be tortured with music that is also sung in a language I can't understand.
With the less than entertaining ceremony, boring speeches, and over indulgent treats its no wonder that I purposely miss the extravagant Academy Award show every year on purpose. At the end of the day I have better things to do than spend three hours watching the Oscars. I don't mind seeing the beautiful gowns the next day but to watch the Oscars would the strangest thing for me considering that 99% of the movies nominated are not ones that I would watch unless I was paid to. Call it the Oscars or the Academy Awards, either way this is one award show I could care less about.

Post a CommentI missed the Oscars this year, but viewed so many Oscar highlights on the Today Show and other programs the following day, I don't feel like I missed that much. However, I would like to see Slumdog Millionaire whenever it comes out on DVD.
First of all, you really didn't realize that the Oscars were the Academy Awards? Are you serious? Secondly, let's be honest, you're not that much of a movie fan anyway really, since you don't even like dramas...BTW when you say "I could care less" do you mean "I couldn't care less"?
Because I am old enough to remember the greats like Peck, Holden, Davis, and Wayne the paucity of talent, Americanism, and joy at the 2008 Oscars is all the more regrettable. People under 30 have no idea what great legacy has been adulterated at what laughingly passes as "Oscar Night." This was my last viewing. mediocre production, high school dropouts lecturing me on what causes to espouse, sanctimonious posturing. And what in heaven's name was the ring of five winners bestowing blessings on the nominees? Hilarity in ego gratification. Hollywood is gone and the simulacrum in its place is a golem. NEVER AGAIN.
Hi Connie,
Thanks for your comments. The swag bag I do feel has to do with the Oscars because just like who looks good or bad, they pay more attention to everything but the actual ceremony. I guess its where your from maybe because no one i know actually watches the Oscars, which is why I created the article. I know many people watches it. It does get millions of viewers, but the numbers steadily drops each year.
do with the sheer apprecation of film and movies and great performances. This year, I am playing catch-up, as I have seen only "Benjamin Button" and "Slumdog Millionaire" of the nominated films, but I attended the Chicago Film Festival (and the Toronto Film Festival) and I predict wins for Mickey Rourke and Heath Ledger, among others. I'll get back to you on the other winners, because I know you're just dying to know...lol. I will find it interesting, as per your "swag bag" comments, if, this year, they cut back becuase of the struggling economy. So, you've found one person who totally and completely disagrees with your conclusions, and I know our friends (with whom we gather to watch the awards show annually) would also say the same thing. It's a matter of personal preferences, as I could care less about the SuperBowl, and yet it will be watched by millions who wouldn't miss it for the world.
Well, I'm going to weigh in now with the "opposition view." I mean no offense, but I must take umbrage with your thoughts on the Oscars. I have not missed an Academy Award show since age 10, and, in fact, have a rotating Oscar party (with actual trophy) and run a contest for predicting (or did when I owned a Sylvan Learning Center. Every year since 1970 I have won something predicting the oscars, and I try very hard to make sure I have seen most of the nominated films. Therefore, to your question, "Who cares about the Academy Awards?" A: I do. No, I am not an actress. I WAS a working film critic for 15 years, and I feel some of your comments on the ceremony, itself, are valid (songs are never the "best;" people care more about the gowns, etc.) But you have gone off-topic when you start in on taxing the "swag bags." That issue is a separate article, perhaps, but it should not be in this piece, because loving movies (and film in general) and caring about the Oscars has nothing at all to
No one cares about these self-serving egotistic liars. Actors/Actresses lie for a living. The better they can fool you into believing they are someone else, the better they are at their job; being a liar.
Lol. I think a lot of people do. I heard the 2007 oscar was on for 4 1/2 hours. That is much too long for a show that is barely entertaining as it is.
