Who is Chelsea Handler and Why is She Giving Jenna Bush Such a Hard Time?

Apparently, Jenna Bush is Being Critiqued by Chelsea Handler and All I Can Ask is "Who?"

Cassandra James
Alright, I'll lay it out on the table. I'm a staunch Democrat. I think George Bush was the worst president America has ever had and that the Bush family are scary. But, when I read this morning that Chelsea Handler was giving Jenna Bush a hard time for Jenna's latest segment on "The Today Show", the only thing I could think was "Who?" Jenna Bush I know. The youngest of the Bush twins, Jenna has been all over the news for years, from her typical drinking-filled college days to her marriage last year to Henry Chase Hager, as well as for her work with UNICEF. But Chelsea Handler? Sorry, not a clue.

Then I started thinking about the audacity of someone like Chelsea Handler who goes after Jenna Bush, a young woman starting out in her TV career, simply because she's the daughter of a president much of America didn't like. Handler apparently (see, I still don't know who Chelsea Handler is!) is a comedian and sometime television host who, I'll bet, was pretty dreadful the first few times she was on camera too. But, now, as Handler has grown too big for her britches, she thinks it's fair game to be nasty about a fellow TV presenter simply because she dislikes her father, and that's really sad.

I don't agree with Republican policies, I don't understand what most Republicans are thinking and I believe the decisions President George W. Bush made while in the White House damaged America almost beyond repair. However, what Bush-the-father did while in the White House has no relation to what his daughter Jenna is doing in her own life and I don't believe my opinion of the father should be visited upon the daughter.

Jenna Bush, in fact, can be pretty cool. She's funny and smart and quite self-deprecating and, surprise surprise, doesn't always agree with or support her father's politics. From being a teenager, Jenna quickly showed she was her own person and could get into trouble with the best of us. From sticking out her tongue at reporters to being caught drinking underage (something that almost every college student does and it sure doesn't make national news), Jenna Bush proved she wasn't always the perfect president's daughter.

But Jenna grew past all that and, with her teaching in inner-city areas, her work with UNICEF and her outspokenness about not always agreeing with her father's politics, she's shown she's her own person and she's doing some worthwhile work.

And, let's face it, we all know Jenna Bush was given "The Today Show" gig because of who her father is, that's obvious. But, it's now up to Jenna to do what she can with that job and do it to the best of her abilities.

Meanwhile, petty 'commentary' from Chelsea Handler who, in my opinion from the YouTube video I saw today, isn't that much better than Jenna Bush and has a whole lot less class, isn't productive or necessary. But I guess Chelsea Handler was never told what Jenna Bush's mother obviously told her, "If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all".

Maybe you should learn something about the writer before you make silly comments :) I live in Bangkok, Thailand. Chelsea Handler isn't on TV in Thailand so unless she pops up in the national news of the US, I have no reason to ever know who she is. However, I DO know who just about every Thai news anchor, actor, actress and singer is as well as many Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese and Malaysian celebrities. Do you? :)

Cassandra- your article annoyed me probably as much as the article you read on Chelsea Handler's monologue.

You asking who Chelsea Handler is reminded me the look my grandmother gave a grocery store clerk who asked "Who is Sean Hannity?". Tons of Americans [sadly] get their news from late night talk shows, so it might be a good idea for you (as a writer on current event topics) to familiarize yourself with them.

After a big "DITTO" to Janro "After all, if you make the choice to be in the spotlight you know you're 'fair game'", I'd like to draw a attention to Chelsea's line "...it’s pretty clear you got this job because of your father much like your father got his job because of his father.”

The Bush family represents a bunch of spoiled rich kids that get whatever they want never suffer any consequences for their actions.

It Jenna Bush is going to blow it on GMA- I want to laugh about it.

    Thanks, Chelsea!

I actually watch Handler's show fairly regularly. She has a harsh sense of humor, to say the least. But if you pay attention you can see that she really isn't awful. In fact, she seems to be a really decent human being. And I do appreciate the fact that someone points out how ridiculous it is to have someone who has no clue what they're doing on a major TV show. I assume that it's not easy to report live in such a major show, but that's exactly why someone with no experience shouldn't be doing it. I would have absolutely no problem if Jenna Bush was a good reporter, but she's not even OK. I think it's perfectly acceptable for someone to comment on her performance. After all, if you make the choice to be in the spotlight you know you're "fair game".

I love Chelsea Handler! She has had 3 books on the NY Times Bestsellers list and a successful tv show where she and other comedians discuss the nonsense of celebrity life and sometimes more important news. They do so knowing what they are talking about is crap and sometimes state this adding that they would love to discuss actual news but it’s the E! network so… Given that Jenna got this show bc of her father and that she sucks at her new job, Chelsea had every right to comment. Jenna has no charisma and she lacks other natural skills one would have to make it on air. she is taking away from those with way more talent but far fewer connections. And Chelsea certainly wasn't the only one, even Matt Lauer looked highly uncomfortable during the clip.

Just another Reader, nope, don't mind other opinions, what I do mind is somebody who leaves nasty comments and uses disgusting language. Then, their comments are deleted. You can disagree and still be polite. You use X-rated language - click - delete.

Out of curiosity CJ, why was Tony's post deleted? Did he disagree with you on some point somehow? Also, about your deletion of his post. That "smacks" a little of censorship to me. I mean, not wanting to hear differences of opinions contrary to yours. If that's the case, just take out the comment section. That way we will know only YOUR opinion matters.

To Tony (who's post was deleted). I do not know who Chelsea Handler is because I live in THAILAND (Amazingly some Americans DON'T live in America) and sorry, nope, I'm a Democrat - so you're wrong again. Now who's stupid? LOL

Your reporting is right on target, and I agree with your political views. As for Hadler, well she seems to be confusing constructive criticism with bullying. Jenna Bush is trying to establish her own career - and influence for a job does not constitute nepotism, it just means that with a little help and maybe a lot of influence, she has been given the opportunity to show her worth. Ratings will determine her value and staying power.

I love you're writing style! You and Saul Relative put so much into such a compact, well-organized piece. You guys deserve your success. It's a pleasure to read you even on subjects (kind of like this) a straight male don't give a hoot about! LOL!

Have you seen J-Bush on the Today Show? The other day she did a story on wolves in Yellowstone...except that she kept referring to the animal as a "woof". She must have taken English lessons from Daddy.
