Who is Doxology and Why Are They Upset with David Cook?
New Controversy Surrounding American Idol Contestant David Cook
David Cook has stood out from other American Idol contestants as he continues to rock the stage week after week. For those who were big fans of Chris Daughtry on Idol, David Cook is a welcoming sight up on stage. David Cook has a willingness to take a risk as well which gives him an edge against his American Idol competitors. Unfortunately David Cook took a risk by using a remake version of a classic Beatles song, Eleanor Rigby. He was found out and now the band, Doxology, is upset at the lack of credit where credit was due.
But you have to wonder why it is that David Cook failed to mention Doxology when he performed their version of Eleanor Rigby on American Idol. If a band were to release a c.d. accompanied by a song originally sung and belonging to another band they would be through. Luckily for David Cook he has yet to sign a contract or produce an album. Seeing as how David Cook simply sang the remake on American Idol is it really anything to become upset over?
I must admit that I have never heard of the band Doxology until this little controversy surfaced. As most bands trying to hit the mainstream I am sure that Doxology's interest in shedding light on the matter has much to do with their quest for national recognition. It appears that their efforts weren't for none as I now can say that, yes I have heard of Doxology. Still none of that matters. David Cook sang their version of Eleanor Rigby and therefore should have mentioned the band's name on the show. It's as simple as that.
So where does David Cook stand after all of this? Will he see his popularity on American Idol fade or will he remain a strong contender? I doubt that this little bit of Idol controversy is enough to make fans of David Cook stop voting for him. Though I am sure that American Idol producers will cover the subject of giving credit where it is deserved with the contestants. I can't say that I can blame Idol for David Cook's mistake as I am sure it is hard to find every single remake of all of the Beatles songs in existence.
Hopefully David Cook has learned his lesson and will no longer fail to mention a band's name when singing yet another rockin' remake. Who knows one day somebody may be singing a remake of one of his songs if he can make it big after American Idol, that is if he should be so lucky.

Post a CommentThe producers of American Idol should have been on top of this, along with giving credit to all the other bands who's remakes are used every week. David Cook shouldn't be penalized for this and I don't believe it will have an adverse effect on his votes. He's one of the most talented singers/performers on the show and definitely deserves to stay around!
I love all the people that wrote that the 2 versions were not the same and there is no way David would use a source and not credit them - well if you watched the live show on Tuesday you learned the truth that has always been there - 1 - the versions were the same as David said he used Doxology's version and 2 - this means he did use an arrangement and not credit this whole time - - - there you have it folks - straight from the horses mouth - - - the truth shall set you free!!!
billie jean - excellent bit of information regarding arrangements of copyrighted songs. And David Cook is hot hot hot. I have to say that I would actually buy this guy's CD when it's released. He's very creative and exciting.
Doxology is getting good press on this. Yay for them.
EVERYONE on Idol uses someone's version. Did anyone get upset when the little prince, David Archuleta, sang Stevie Wonder's version of "We Can Work it Out"? No. Probably because Stevie didn't whine about it...he doesn't need the publicity.
Watching American Idol live right now and David Cook just admitted it was Doxology's version. Sorry to all the people who did not want to see the truth but there it was live!
Doxology has gotten a good ride out of the coincidence that David Cook sang a Beatles song that Doxology also covered. If you listen to the two versions, you'll note they're both "Eleanor Rigby" but that's where the resemblance ends. Just because the band claims it's their version doesn't make it so. Cook has been careful to acknowledge his sources, since he hasn't in this case, this flap may just be Doxology's grab for a little p.r. on his coattails.
I think he gots great talent, maybe a little cocky at times, but he does have talent!!!!!!!!!!!! great job!!!!!
... belongs to the original writer/composer. It does seem that the right thing to do in many cases is to acknowledge whose arrangement of a song inspired your own arrangement. On American Idol, however, nearly every performer who tries for "originality" is using someone's arrangement. The problem here seems to be that David Cook is borrowing from Indie/alternative artists' arrangements even though he "changes them up," and these far more creative artists don't take kindly to it since usually their arrangements move the song into a whole new genre. It's not near-copy of a Whitney tune we're talking about, but something artistic and creative and technically skillful. Which actually says a whole LOT for and about David Cook!
I wanted to know what the copyright laws for derivative works and arrangements of copyrighted works actually is. It was hard to locate, but I finally found the answer in THE COPYRIGHT LAW AND THE MUSICIAN: A Guide to the 1976 Copyright Law, byDavid Richards:
You may not create an arrangement of a copyrighted work without written per-
mission from the copyright holder (usually the music publisher in this case).
This permission must be obtained before starting work. If permission is
granted to do an arrangement, it will allow the arrangement and a limited
number of copies to be made in exchange for a fee. It is important to remember
that even if permission is granted, YOU DO NOT OWN YOUR ARRANGEMENT. It re-
mains the property of the copyright holder. If a greater number of copies were
made of the arrangement than permission was given for, they would be regarded
the same as any other illegal copies.
According to copyright laws, then, every arrangement made of a song
