So Mayor Bloomberg and his "go-bag" suggestions have been very helpful; people's mass hysteria in buying all things bread and water related has been very funny, and the mass exodus in light of Hurricane Irene's impending disaster may have been prudent, but there's something else that's been bugging me.
On WABC radio (and other places, no doubt) they have been running this commercial for days now which says something to the effect of "make sure you've got your radio and batteries and keep it locked to 77 WABC." Mayor Bloomberg for his go-bag also suggested people have a radio and batteries. But who the heck has a battery powered radio anymore? I'd take it one step further and ask who has a battery powered anything anymore? I mean, our cell phones and laptops have batteries; but that's not the alkaline AA type they are talking about.
I thought back to my youth; in the 1980's; in an era before all of this. When the best piece of electronics I had was my Nintendo Entertainment System. But I also had a Walkman. A battery powered device which doubled as a radio when I wasn't rocking out to my killer mix tapes. But that was in the 1980's. As the store shelves sit ransacked with no more batteries, I wonder what people are even going to use them for.
I'm trying to even remember the last time I had a battery powered anything. I went to college in 1997 and I may have still had a Discman but that didn't have the benefit of a radio.
Oh well, if we can't stream it or digitally see it on our pods or pads or phones, I guess we could always poke our heads out our doors and (gasp!) talk to one another. As of right now though we still have power so maybe we won't actually need to talk to each other after all.

Post a CommentIt is amazing how times have changed. Ever time my son ask for something, we (his father and I) always say the same thing which begins with 'you know when we were your age the only thing we had was imaginations and atari'
As I think about it though I don't think I have anything around here that is battery operated except children toys and my digital camera.
Jesse, this is so ironic because we just found an old radio but we don't have any batteries! LOL It's pounding rain here now, no winds though. Hang in there. cheers
