Who Killed Me Billboards: The New Wave for Getting Information

Shirley Adkins
Throughout time, many murders have gone unsolved. Killers seem to have found ways to commit the perfect unsolvable crime. Why is this? Are they that smart or is it because witnesses are scared to come forward? How do we change this?

We have come a long way on cutting down on the abduction and murder of children since the AMBER Alert Program was put into effect. Amber Alert instantly alerts communities to assist in the search for and safe recovery of missing and abducted children. Nearly 96% of these children are recovered, thanks to Amber Alert.

We also have the television show, America's Most Wanted, which re-creates crimes to air on TV. Any information that the police have is included in the show. With this kind of information going into homes all across the nation, many unsolved crimes are now being solved and can at long last be closed. Thanks to John Walsh and America's Most Wanted, over 1000 fugitives have been caught.

Now, there appears to be a new idea being put into place for obtaining information. It is the Who Killed Me Billboards. These billboards feature the words, "Who Killed Me?", a picture of the victim and the date of the crime. They offer cash rewards for information and some even offer the services of the National Witness Protection Plan.

The Who Killed Me Billboards have been sighted in several different cities, including Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Oakland. I have even seen one here in Shreveport, Louisiana. It is one of the new changing sign billboards located across from the Air Force base and the Who Killed Me sign shows up every 3 minutes.

Maybe these billboards are the next wave of gathering information. Maybe we need to try a little harder at getting the information out to the public that a crime has been committed. Maybe someone out there might be a witness or have information concerning a crime and they don't even know it until they see the billboard and remember seeing that person with someone the night of the murder!!

Could these billboards be used to notify the public of other crimes? We use posters and flyers to obtain information concerning missing persons, but what if we use a billboard to get more people's attention? What if known fugitives' pictures were plastered on billboards across the country? It would make it kind of hard for the fugitives to find a place to hide.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of an unsolved crime, contact a billboard company about renting a sign and get the information out there to the public. Some companies may even donate the billboard space. Join this new wave and let's try to solve some of these crimes. Someone out there may have the information you need!
