Murder on a Sunday Afternoon

The attack occurred near the home of Mr. Beatty's mother. It happened near Northwest 15th Avenue and 59th Street in Miami, Florida, reports the Daily Mail. The shooting occurred at about noon on a Sunday afternoon on a street with numerous other pedestrians out and about.

Black Nissan Maxima with Dark Windows

The shooter was driving a 1999 black Nissan Maxima with dark windows. During the attack he was wearing a hoodie and a mask. This seems to be a targeted killing. Why would someone want to murder Michael Beatty.

NBC reports that Michael's mother has asked the public to come forward with information about her son's murder. "Everybody out there talking about..that's my buddy ..but then you see him get shot down in the street like that and won't say nothing, how can you be that way?"

Omerta

When silence reigns around a crime, even though there were witnesses, that is known as "omerta." Too often witnesses will not speak out about what they saw because they are afraid if they provide any information they will be targeted for murder too.

Let's hope someone does the right thing and calls in a tip about who the killer is. Many people who have seen the video must know who the young man driving the Nissan is. He's probably right from the neighborhood where the murder occurred.

In urban areas in the USA the young men have a very high death rate. There is a sense of fate about the high death rate. Too many kids know that many of their peers will be shot to death before they hit age 25. They make jokes about not getting out of high school alive.

Gun Violence Out of Control

It is tragic that America is losing so many young people to gun violence. The gun companies are making a profit, but that money is tainted with the blood of all the young people who will lose their lives to gun violence.

When I taught in an urban high school I heard too much talk about guns. I saw too many kids showing their friends their bullet wounds. I heard too many stories about gun deaths, about shootings at parties, and saw too many front page headlines about kids gunned down on the street. Gun violence is out of control.

Why do young men insist on shooting their peers to death? It is tragic that our nation has come to this. Perhaps the film industry and the video game industry need to stop selling such violent images to kids. Why glamorize violence?

Death Penalty

The state of Florida does utilize the death penalty. And yet murders continue. If this criminal is arrested should he get the death penalty? He certainly looks eager to kill as he sprints down the street after his victim. Will he be quite so energetic when he's caught and realizes that next he too may be killed?

It is always terrible when a young life is cut short like that. It is important for people to come forward and say something. Unfortunately, the criminals have too much power.

"The state of Florida does utilize the death penalty. And yet murders continue". That's because the death penalty is not used properly. They are punished long after the crime has been forgotten and only if they haven't died of old age first. How does that deter other criminals? Very sad indeed.
