Who Knew? Prunes for Healthier Bones

Abby Willow

Who knew that prunes had a greater purpose than helping you, well, poop? Turns out that prunes have another amazing talent as well- improving bone density as we age, and helping to recoup the bone loss that naturally occurs. So, not only are prunes great at keeping our hearts healthy and wonderful at keeping us in great digestive health (not to mention the fat-burning properties) but prunes are top-notch fighters against bone loss as well. Learn how the amazing prune betters bone density.

Prunes outnumber all other studied fruits in rebuilding and maintaining bone density. The reason? Prunes when ingested slow down the breaking down of bone mass, and actually cause bone mass and density to rebuild itself. A study done over a year on a group of women after menopause showed that when eating 10 dried plums a day (along with a calcium and vitamin D supplement), the density in their spines and upper arms was far greater than that of women who ate 3.5 ounces of apples daily for a year. This study was done on postmenopausal women by researchers in Oklahoma and Florida.

One researcher of the study found prunes to outnumber other fruits enormously, claiming that prunes had the ability to rebuild bone density better than raisins, figs, dates, and strawberries. The most surprising effect prunes has on bone density is the fact that it can create bone density that is lost by natural age and hormones, such as menopause, which no other fruit studied can even come close to. Amazing!
