Who Makes the Best Wiener, Sara Lee or Kraft?

And Who Lies the Most?

Abby Greenhill

Do you know who has the best wiener, Sara Lee or Kraft? If you aren't a hot dog fan, you might as well just skip this, unless you believe in truth in advertising. The public shouldn't be lied to, even when it comes to the wiener.

Sara Lee Corp. makes Ball Park franks, and Kraft Foods Inc. makes Oscar Mayer. These two giants will face off in court so a judge can decide which one is providing false advertising. This battle-royal has been going on for a few years.

In 2009 Sara Lee yelled foul, saying that the Kraft ad claiming that Oscar Mayer beat Ball Park franks in taste tests wasn't on the up and up. Sara Lee contends that Kraft changed the way hot dogs were cooked and served which altered the results. What? Isn't a hot dog just that, meat scraps in a casing served in a dry bun then slathered with mustard and other things to hide the taste of the hot dog?

Kraft became crafty and filed a lawsuit against Sara Lee claiming they ran false and deceptive ads. They didn't like the campaign where Ball Park franks were declared the best and no other wieners could compare. Isn't the only thing that separates one wiener from the next depend on the spices, or lack of spices?

How do we expect people to get along if two large entities such as these two wiener wackers are arguing about who makes the best hot dog? Can you name at least two other problems going on in the United States that are way more important that the battle of what's in the bun?

A hot dog is just that, a hot dog. Whether you prefer Ball Park franks or Oscar Mayer, so what? How many of you buy a product based on advertising? If you do, then try the product and don't agree, you move on right? Come on you big wieners; let's argue about burgers for a while. Who makes the best burger and who lies the most? No, wait, who makes the best cup of coffee, and so on -- .

Oh to be a fly on the wall at the courtroom in Chicago.

I had to come to this article to post a commnet about your hurricane article. I still cannot sign in on news articles. Anyway... you are so right on in what you wrote about the people who looked at the hurricane as boring. That makes me so darn mad. What a strange world we live in now! It was a super article, Abby!

As a former hot dog afficianado, there IS definitely a difference. But Ballpark and Oscar Meyer are just so so hot dogs. I guy Ball Parks or Dietz and Watson's Lite Franks (which are pretty good and the pink packages fund breast cancer research). Smith's hot dogs made in Erie PA and any kosher hot dog beat Kraft and Sara Lee hands down. Ergo for any "Home made" dogs, i.e., Amish farmers or small local hot dog makers.

Anthony Wiener doesn't seem to be among the best weiner, but he seems to lie at times.
