Who Put the Bug in His Ear?

Moth Flies into Ear on Baseball Field

Michele Starkey

I've heard some crazy stories in my life but when I heard the news recently that a moth flew into outfielder Matt Holliday's ear during a baseball game on Monday night I couldn't believe it.

The news stated that moth was removed with tweezers and escaped unscathed. After several hours in a plastic bag, the bug sadly died. "It died from an overflow of wisdom that he got in my head," Holliday said.

I believe the funniest part of the story is that his trainers actually held a bright light to Holliday's ear trying to lure the moth into the light. Can you imagine the scenario? The baseball player is grimacing while the moth flutters and buzzes inside of his ear and his trainers are holding the light trying to coax the moth to fly towards it?

What would cause the moth to fly into Holliday's ear in the first place? In 2003, a woman in the UK went to the doctor after hearing a loud buzzing in her ear and guess what? The doctor removed a moth. She thought she had tinnitus and was quite shocked when the moth emerged. You can read it here.

So, apparently Matt Holliday isn't the first and surely won't be the last to have a moth put the bug in his ear. We may never fully understand why moths are motivated to fly into ears. Perhaps ear plugs will be the newest equipment on the ball field.

By the way, moths are attracted to light because of Phototaxis which is the organism's movement towards light. Cockroaches are negatively phototaxis and will scatter when light is turned on.

Hopefully you'll never read about a cockroach crawling into a baseball player's ear on the field.

Holliday's comment was funny! The thought of a bug crawling in my ear, or nose or mouth creeps me out. Thanks for a great read.
