Before you read any other part of this, really think about this question. When you hear the term "gun owner", what, or whom do you think of? On the opposite end, when you hear the term "gun control", what or whom do you envision?
The second amendment is the most controversial and argued amendment set forth in the bill of rights. It has been argued by both sides, for personal gain for well over a hundred years. So why is it still considered a gray area by some?
School shootings and other atrocities have enabled the anti firearms folks into likening the murders committed by people with firearms to the spoon making Rosie O'donnell fat. It's ludicrous. Other countries such as Britain have a very anti-gun atmosphere, but yet have a large amount of murders done with knives! They have even contemplated banning knives of sorts, next they will be banning forks.
President-elect Obama prior to his election, was somewhat of a gun rights supporter, advocating for the "hunters", but still disagreeing with a need for large capacity firearm magazines. This was said simply to get votes from his opponents supporters. "assault weapons have only one purpose, to kill people". This quote was from Obama, in response to a question posed in a debate vs. Alan Keyes. Did his opinion change after the election? Who knows, because in my head, his mind was allready made up.
Every article I have ever read regarding firearms outside of a gun magazine is usually anti gun. Even if it is pro gun, the author resorts to quoting, as I have, numerous sources, making accusations based on other peoples quotes, and generally looking pretty intelligent for doing so. After all, look at Obamas speech writer. I, on the other hand, would like to give an actual perspective on firearms that's personal. That's right, I said personal. That means I have had actual experience, for many years, and would like to voice my opinion. Perhaps I'm being a bit blunt for all the zealous anti gun folks out there, who have nothing more to go on than what they read or watch on television, and that frustrates me.
I was given my first gun at age eight. It was a .22 caliber target rifle, and my father and I would faithfully go every Thursday night to the local rod and gun club so I could practice, and compete in their youth league. This went on for more than four years, and in that time, not only did I learn a mature respect for handling of firearms, I had a bonding with my father that I never could have gotten outside of it, for I really lacked any talent at other sports, even though I tried. Years later, my father and I purchased shotguns, and shot skeet together, and although I was horrible, and my sisters could shoot better, it was still a wonderful time, each time we went together. The years progressed, and so did my life. I accrued many firearms, and today my son is learning the respect you give to a gun, and sportsman like shooting of firearms. I compete on a infrequent basis in target matches of all kinds, and still have the fondness for the collection and display of my guns.
This is the part where I am supposed to put the "but". So here it is. I don't see the need to hunt with a large capacity magazine, but sometimes going to the range and firing off thirty rounds out of a mag is cleansing to the soul. I like the "evil black rifles". In fact, I own two and compete in target matches with one of them. Assault rifles? Any rifle could be used to "assault" someone. I am a fan of concealed carry of a firearm, but not a fan of those who do it to boost their "machismo".
Lastly, I believe in our constitutional rights, as they were written, not as they were interpreted by anyone who has a personal vendetta. Take away one, and the next thing you know, we might not be able to speak our minds.
Oh, and by the way, I heard a rumor that Weider is being banned because using their weight benches will give you enormous biceps, and they will not take responsibility for some hulk with huge muscles beating an old lady for not giving up her parking spot.
